TEST THE

WATER

Be* Isle City’s water U known to be of the purest and beet, equal In many reepecU to the widely advertised table waters. It U drawn from artesian wells over 9P*» feet In depth, and has always been chemically pure

and extremely b~ itbful.

Nevertheless, ti e- nild appear that a quarterly analysis of the Clty’i Water would be > good thing. Alter a periodical laboratory test the public In general mould be better satisfied with the purity of the water they Consume, and this test would have great advertising value to the City. With proper broadcasting of these quarterly tests, the purity of Sea lale City’s water would be one of Its best advertising features, especially In Philadelphia where the water la generally admitted to be anything but

worth boasting about.

This is one of the many little things that could be done to safeguard the public health locally, and

COUNTY BEAUTIFICATION In Monmouth County, New Jersey, an association baa been formed by Mayor Hetrick, of Aabury Park, for the purpose of planting trees along the highways of that County. This la along the line of a movement started to plant shade trees along the White Horse Pike, from Camden to Abeecon. This plan has been endorsed by Governor Sllaer. and various civic organisations. Including Lions Clubs. Rotaries and women’s organisations, are already at work to bring tha plan Into oper-

ation.

What a fine move toward the beautification of Cape May County could be accomplished It both of the State roads could be planted with shade trees. It could be done. If the townships would co-operate and the support of the property owner* could be procured. Several years ago the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce had such a plan In mind, and a County Beautiful Committee was nam« go Into the matter, but for some eon nothing was done. Her* la one real accomplishment that could be set for the 19Z3 program of the Chamber. The cost would be Insignificant compared with the reault.

HIS VIEW OP IT There are two responsibilities f or prohibition, eaya Eugene K. Bird In the Hackensack Republican. Local authorities who tailed to enferoe laws governing the tale of Intoxicant*, and licenses of the courts who persisted In violating the laws and miHny * disgraceful debauchery of their busl-

tea

This responsibility Is about equally divided with perhaps a shade greater onus upon proeecuton. courts and their machinery- Theae forces, largely through political influence, permitted all manner of Irresponsible and disreputable characters to conduct saloons and barrooms that were public menace. The officials, through failure to enforce .the law. and the saloon men who floated moral public sentiment, created an Indignation which spread over the nation to the filial undoing of the entire buslnes* In Intoxicating beverages. i The country is now at the other! extrem- —natural fanatics sad- paid xealots art carrying the prohibition question so far beyond common sense judgment that in time there will be a revulsion of sentiment and a swing back to at least, sn approximation

of the old order.

It will never be possible to reestablish degrading saloons that debauch manhood and womanhood, but the idea of making this or any other country absolutely "dry" will prove be a fiction. The desire for a stimulant of alcoholic content Is so deeply Implanted by nature that It

will never he eradicated.
