Hew Use for Ortter SheU time All farmers and landscape gardeners are well acquainted with the good qualities of finely ground oyster shell lime for finishing off an alfalfa seed bed or putting that finishing touch to s fine lawn or golf course. But perhaps they ha^e not heard of Us Insecticidal value as experienced by Mr. Richard Ford, of t'us Torreedale Golf Club, of Philadelphia. Grub worms, otherwise known as the larvae of the June Beetle, are often very destructive to lawns. In this Instance, these grubs were so numerous thst the sod In parts of the Torreedale golf course was dying. The grubs had fed upon the root* until the upper part of the plant* were completely cut off from the root system. It was learned that the Oyster SheU Products Company of Philadelphia had vary finely ground oyster shell lime that was known to have value as a plant food and was claimed to ha vs value aa a worm killer. Several hundred pounds of this jyster shell lime was purchased ind applied about one-half Inch thick on greens where the worm injury worst. Then the sprinkler was turned on and left to wash the pulverised oyster shell Into the soli all night. Next morning hundreds of dead gruba ware found and !n a short while the lawn took on s healthy appearance again as though on Injury had been done. This experience Is mentioned because the same treatment might be of benefit to some of our resort and Inland lawn owners, who bold their lawns as a valuable part of tbelr asset*. Certainly It ctn be said, that In addllic’i to any insecticidal value of oyster sheU ’'toe 1( has all otbe -jualItim ol sgricuii. ’al lime as weU as one-half of one pi cent, nitrogen which is one of the beat plant foods.
