AHOTHEB ACCIDEHT 01 COUHTT CROSSDIG Last Saturday witnessed another horrible accident on one of the County railroad crosalngs. in which live people were killed. The outstanding tact of this accident, as with other accidents this year, is the lack of protection at dangerous crossings on s much traveled main highway. Early last year the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce took up \ Uh the railroad companies operating through this County the matter of more adequate protection at crosalngs. and a Committee of the Chamber met with the railroad officials and inspected several different warning and safety devices, after which resolutions adopted approving one type, and a definite promise wes received from the rallroeda that such protection would be provided. The summer season of 1923 drawing to a done, and the crossings are still unprotected, save for the usual warning bells, which moet of the time cannot be heard above the noise of auto travel. Certainly the railroads are tlcularly lax In this respect, and from an economic viewpoint both the railroads and the County is vertlnlng, are losing and losing very
heavily.
In last Saturday's accident the driver of the ill-fated ear was ; ably largely at fault, but UiU not relieve the railroad of Its iblliiy in furniahlng such complete protection that drivers of automobiles cannot help but recognise n croeslng nor fail to get ample warning of the approach of a train.
AUTOMOBILES OH THE FARM Not only in this country, but throughout the world Americans are "good spenders.” Now, according to Internal revenue bureau reports, we have hung up a new record for ai ing. This applies not only to socalled luxuries, but to things useful. The amount of money which hea peeeed for the period under review has been derived from the increase in business and the government has reaped the results in increased taxation, due to the generally prosperous times. For the eleven months ended May 31, the United States Treasury says $133,000,000 was paid In automobile taxes and for accessories, indicating that sales of automobiles approximated $3,000,000. Taxes from this source In the months of spring and summer have almost doubled. This shows that when American people are given a chance to earn money they have no hesitancy in spending It. The treasury report also Indicates that in the rural districts the farmers have not only been buying luxuries but also home and farm neceaaartas in unusually large quan-
tities.
Farmers as a class are among the heaviest spenders in the country. The fanner Is a big buyer of automobiles and tractors and to him the former not so much a luxury aa a necessity. because quick transportation la itial in his busi'.eas. When the farmer is able to buy automobiles he Is making business for those who live In the cities and tlu money cteuee back to him in tome form for the products of his industry. It is insignificant of the natlon''a prosperity end confidence in its continuance when the people of this coutry in less than a year buy $3. 000.000.000 worth of motive power for purposes of business or pleasure.
MOSQUITO C0HTR0L Yee. we have mosquitoes. Plenty of them. There’s no use In trying to conceal the fact because of the poor advertising the atatttuent might make, for goodness knows, there is no visitor to this County during the few weeks who is not well acquainted with the fact Early in the season there were few, if any mosquitoes, and the thought generally was that the moequlto control work in the County was having But with the first rain came the unwelcome pests, and they are still with us. Let’s face the facta squarely, the peat five or six years the County had its Mosquito Extermination Commission and Us County and Stats appropriations for mosquito control work. So far ms the visible effect of thesa years’ labor is money and effort might better have been spent in trying to drain the Atlantic Ocean. Either the spending of money for is work should be stopped and the moequlto be taken as aa accepted end necessary evil, or a survey of the County should be made by someone who can authoritatively state the conditions here and the remedy, anf sufficient money be spent AT ONE TIME to properly drain the County and ccfenplete the work of extermina-
tion.
We've fooled with this thing long enough. Either the County can he made mosqultoless. or It CANNOT.
There Is no middle course.
Let us face the facts, and either
