The od>er night I overheard two Stare windows talking. One was dark ; And spoke in a whisper, but the other, Well lighted, answered in a good dear tone. The dark one said, enviously, ■ “I suppoas your owner will fix you all up For the coining season so that a lot Of people will stop and lock at you. And then go into your store and come out With their arms full of ounctLs. 1 But you are worth no more than 1 ’* "No.” said the bright window, ‘I was worth no more than you Until my owner saw that right lighting And a good display p»an would mnk* me Stead out like a well-dressed person In a crowd of shabby ones. That is why people come here. Instead of your way. Perhaps your owner will leam sometime That better lighting means better business.” Courtesy of “Edison Sales Builder”

THE TELEPHONE SITUATION H ERE are the facts which every telephone user and every prospective telephone subscriber should understand. This company faces a situation which, unaided, it cannot solve. The present rates for telephone service do not provide sufficient revenues even to meet our fixed charges. Last year this company not only failed to earn a dividend on the $4,728,500 of capital stock investment; but also railed by $115,000 to earn the interest charges on $10,377,239 it had borrowed to finance necessary extension of its plant It’s a situation which demands relief if we are to continue to fiiva the people of South Jersey the service which the; are asking. Right now we are in the midst of the greatest coo. struction program ever attempted in South Jersey. We are endeavoring by every possible mean, to meet the tremendous demands for new telephones. This program calls for new funds—an average of $4,000,000 a year for the next five years. We ask only for rates which will permit us to operate on a sound financiai basis—to pay all our expenses and attract the new capital necessary to meet the demand. for new service.
