dreaxaen and spendthrifta. when in reality they are sarin* the future, sad hailed as putdie benefactor? There is scarcely a city anywhere which is not a shining example money could hare been sared by the thousand* of dollar* by tbe exercise of a modicum of foresight. The most prevalent sbortsightednese is the failure to reserve land for park, playground and public buildwhen It is cheap. »cd then buying It up when the value has increased many times. At this time Sea Isle City Is confronted with Just such a problem. Through its contract with the Atlantic City Electric Company. Sea Isle has oo it* hands tbe building used as an electric light plant. and wo doubt many people think the building, should be sold and the proceeds used to cancel some of the city's indebtedness. Mayor Fitch does not take this view of the problem. Instead His Booor. la a letter to the City Cotamiasioner* last week advocated the recaiaing by the city of the building aad its conversion Into s convention hall. This is genuine foresight. This Is looking into tbe future with a true prophetic eye. The Bite of this building, facing on two streets and within a stone's throw of the beach, in a few year* will be valuable beyond compare. This Is particularly tree when It is considered that there are few unimproved building sites In tbe central section of the dty. east of Landis Avenue, to be had at this time and that real estate values are constantly advancing. no receding, and two or three year* from now will advance with a

rapidity

By m mean* should the dty dispose of this piece of real estate. So much for tbe property value aide of the problem. The other side Is of equal financial importance to Sea Isle City. Tbe resort needs a public hall for the housing of conventions aad large gartheringa of people. Atlantic City Is prepared to handle conventions of any size, that Is why that dty gets ao many, and they mean hundreds of thousands of dollar* to her bolt la and busintaa bouses Other resorts and dties all over the country are catering to conventions. To get them there must be accommodations. We have none to speak of at this time The electric light building could be converted into a good convention hall and once It was made known that Sea Isle City had such a hall and an effort was made to bring conventions here, tbe resultant money brought into the resort would soon ptove to be big Interest on tbe investment, with a surplus for a sinking fund. The City Commissioners will do well to give careful consideration to tbe timely suggestion of Mayor Fitch and will serve the best interests of Sea Isle by taking steps to make it

effective.

SHOWS BY AUDIT

CAPE MAY City voters, by a majority of 111. on Tuesday decided to try tbe city manager plan of running if* local affairs Few. if any. municipalities in New Jersey are run unde.- .he dty manager plan and Cape May City's experiment will be watched with much interest. If given free rein, with no secret strings tied to him. a man fitted for the job ought to be able to put Cape May City’s municipal affairs on a atrictly bus!-

Municipalities, like individuals, cannot go on losing in business year after year without reaching a stopping point. Tbe audits of Sea Isle City's finances for the yean 1>22 and 1923 show that this municipality had reached tbe point in the operation cf its electric utility where It was wise to call a halt, and If there to anyone who still questions tbe wisdom of making a contract with the Atlantic City corporation to furnish this dty with electric current, a study of the audita should remove all doubts on that point. For the year 1S22 the corrected deficit was M.254.19. while for 1923 it amounted to 113.490.71. or a total for the two year* of $21,744.90. The*, figures should be sufficient to convince the most optimlstlr advocate of municipal osnerahlp and operation that there «aa too great a difference between the city's elect ri? Income and outgo and that the only sensible course was to seek to reduce tbe outgo and that la Just what

haa been done.
