Better Railroad Service Asked For
Transportation Committee of County
Chamber of Commerce Presents Needs to Bailroad Officials
Work Needed To Bring Result H. Foster Goslln, chairman of the transportation committee County Chamber of Commerce, together with Luther C. Ogden, Director of the Board of Freeholders, and Mayor Gilbert Smith, of Avalon, who la secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, presented the need of additional train service to the Pennsylvania officials at Broad Street Sutton, 'rnursday. March 6. The railroad was represented by R. V. Massey, general manager of the Eastern Region; Oliver T. Boyd, general passenger agent; Andrew J. Buchanan, assistant general passenger agent; James E. Murphy, division passenger agent; T. C. Herbert, superintendent of Wes' Jersey and Seashore Railroad, lud J. E. Borrell, superintendent of transportation. The Committee for the Chamber of Commerce requested; I. Restoration of regular service as In former years, on April 1. 1926, with no change of cars at Sea Isle or Wildwood Junction; afternoon local leaving at 1.30, returning 'at 3.40; leaving time of early morning express moved up to 6.BO o'clock; all express trains two hours
or better.
In reply to this request the railroad officials suted that in accordance with the compromise effected before the Public Utilities Commission last fall, the service was to be restored on April 26. the date that daylight saving would bscot live. All of the above points would be taken care of with the exception of the afternoon local, which would be operated out of Wildwood only, combining this train with fast freight from Two Mile Beach to take care of the shipment of fish. 2. A $3.60 round trip fare to all points in Cape May county. The round trip as it now stands is $3.60 to all points in Cape May county from Ocean City to Stone Harbor Inclusive. The fare to Wildwood. North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Cape May la 14.20. The railroad committer pointed out that the commutation tickets to all of theee points are exactly the same price and that •.he rate is not baaed on actual mileage but la based on the fact that Cape May county resorts are tourist or excursion points. Tbs railroad of-
ficials explained that the Reading Company, having the ahortest line, made the rate and that they were compelled to use the same fare in order to meet comprUtlon. It developed In the cours- of the conference that Atlantic City, which also has $3.60 round trip rare. Is B6 9-10 miles on the Reading; Ocean City, having the same fare, is 66 4-10 miles, a difffrence of practically JO miles. To Wildwood on the Reading the distance Is 76 9-10 miles, or about 10 miles further than the Ocean City distance. The committee argued for tha $3.60 fare on the basis as outlined, claiming that inasmuch as the commutation fares were equal and there waa a difference of 10 miles between Atlantic City and Ocean City that the additional 10 milee to Wildwood and Cape May should not make 60c Increase In the round trip fare. The railroad men admitted that the rates were not made on a mileage basis nor were they compelled by the Interstate Commerce Commission to base them on the long and short haul clause In the rate fixing agreement. It further developed that the Pennsylvania line to Ocean City is 77 5-10 miles and the distance to Wildwood over the Pennsylvania is 79 8-10 miles, a difference of only 2 3-10 milee. While the officials of the Pennsylvania Railroad did give the committee any eaUataction that would tend toward a reduction In the round trip fare to Wildwood and Cape May, It Is believed that the reduction could be accomplished If the matter were placed before the
proper State authorttlea.
3. A special week end ticket with reduced fare, good from May 1 to June 20 and from Labor Day to November 1. Tie railroad men admitted that this would be a good proposition for the Cape May county resorti and would 'end to build up U>< spring, early summer and faU bustbut they could not run special rate trains to one point and not to another. They explained that If they granted this point to Cape May county, Atlantic City would Immediately demand a similar proposition. Tne committee, however, believe that this proposition Is a Just one and would unquestionably produce Increased business for the railroads and for the
on tourist excursions operating from Southern points. We have had this connection from Pittsburg the past two summers. The railroad officials promised to try and work this out If possible. 6. A through week-end train frem New York, with reduced fare, from Memorial Day until Labor Day. The same arguments were advanced against the operation of such s train as against the third point in the program. 7. The 150-trlp commutation ticket be made good the entire year. These tickets are now good for six months. Tbs railroad men refused absolutely to consider any such proposition. Operation of the gasoline car from Ocean City to Stone Harbor, making late connections with the Shore Fast Line at Ocean City, providing for the sale of tickets from Philadelphia to Pleasantville. via Newfleld. from Pleasantville to Ocean City via the Shore Fast Line, and thence to Sea Isle City, Avalon and Stone Harbor via the gasoline car. This proposition did not meet with much favor, although the railroad men agreed to give it their conslder-
Uon.
9. Better New York connections on the morning and afternoon bridge tralne at North Phlladelp, la. The way the schedule has been made up In past years there have been available only four mtnutee for this connection at North Philadelphia, and it consequently was not an advertised connection. The committee felt that this waa an Important matter and requested the railroad officials to move up the leaving time of our bridge trains, so that there would be at least 15 or 2 minutes st North Philadelphia for this New York connection. The railroad men agreed to Investigate this matter and do hat they could to rearrange the
■M table.
1. Move up the leaving time ke local that now leave* Cape May and Wildwood at •.66 to » o'clock. to make the 10.S7 connection at Millville, which would make
the arrival time of this train 12 o'clock at Philadelphia Instead of 1 o'clock. The railroad officials also promised to give this matter their consideration and endeavor to arrange the time table accordingly. The committee reports that while the raliroad officials treated them with a great amount of courtesy and fairness, there was no disposition to give an inch, toward the accomplishment of any of the Important Items set forth In the program. The committee also feel that It Is the intention of *he railroads to padlock the Cape May county reeorta again next winter with the same train service that baa been In effect during the past few months. This is an unfortunate situation confronting the citlsena at Cape May county, and one that will call -for a i^eat amount of bard work, perseverance and deter-
mined opposition.
Cape May county cannot grow without proper and adequate transportation facilities, and it looks as though It would be necessary to fight and fight fc*rd to gst them.
4. A late tTaln on the Pennsylvania Railroad the entire year. This Is the same train that now operates out. of Wildwood from July 6 to Labor Day. leaving at 9 P. M. and returning at 1 A. M. The railroad officials considered this matter somewhat in the manner of a Joke, aa they did not feel that anyone should want to get out of Cape May county after 4 o'clock In the afternoon through
the winter months.
5. A eleeper to connect with our bridge trains at North Philadelphia
