Further Hearing rn Monday Charge# against Lewis Bennett, a member of the Cape May City Election Board, led to a bitter exchange of personalities at a meeting of the County Board of Elections. held In the Court Houae, Monday afternoon. Bennett was re-appolnted by the County Board of Elections on May 8. When his certificate of appointment did not arrive last Monday a delegation from Cape May City visited the Prosecutor's office and demanded that he make an Instigation of the affair. Chairman of the County Board of Elections George Jeffery* called a meeting of tbe County Board the same afternoon for the same purpose. Prosecutor Campbell attended the meeting, which was held In the rooms of the County Board of Elections. Chairman Jeffery* demanded of Millard Richardson, secretary ol tbe board, why the certificate had not been forwarded to Bennett. Richardson stated that he withheld the certificate upon tbe advice of John Graham, tbe Wildwood member of the County Election Board. It appeared that the list of appointments for the local elecUon boards, which la generally furnished by the chairman of the county committee of both parties, had not been furnished by the Democratic leader and the County Board bad filled the vacancies. Graham did not attend this meeting, which was held on May 8. Graham stated that he had been Informed that charges had been made against Bennett end he asked Richardson to withhold the appointment until the Board could meet and discuss the matter. Bennett was charged with electioneering during the recent political battle in Cape May City Instead or filling his office. Prosecutor Campbell, who waa asked for an opinion, advised the board once an appointment had been made tbe only person that could excuse an election officer from duty was the Common Pfeas Ji'dge. or he could be removed af-' ter a bearing by the County Board of Elections, where the accused should be permitted to make a defence. Chairman Jefferys directed that Bennett, who attended the meeting. be given his certificate of appointment and stated “If the chsrgM against Bennett are to b* pressed now is the time to Inform the County Board." Jer# Chambers, Councilman of Cape Mry, who made the first objection to Bennett's appointment, signified ills Intention cf pressing the chargee. This caused a protest by Charles York, George Wentiell. former Commissioners, and Charles Campbell, all of Cape May, defended Bennett. A bitter tirade and an exchange of uncomplimentary remarks were exchanged. Csmuel Lannlng. of Wildwood, took sxception tc Evans Slaugtner. who laughed at him while b ' was apaaking. Lannlng roared Imputations aa to 8laughter's party loyalty and In a short and ugly word Inferred that be waa not exactly truthful. Slaughter waa the Democratic nomine* for State Senator last fall. Slaughter retorted by asking Lannlng some very pertinent questions. A parade of dirty Haen was imminent when the pair started to assume pugilistic altltudro S***ral persons Interfered, but Ibe majority. who were quarreling a few minutes before, gleefully drmand"Let them settle It." Drastic action waa averted and a demand waa made upon Cham here to withdraw hi* charges. Councilman Chamber* refused to withdraw bla charge*, atatlng Ben nett had the perogstlvr of resigning or standing trial before the Board. Bennett accepted bla appolotmsnt. The County Board decided to hold the hearing next Monday evening at 7.SO. Chairman Jefferys stated that aa ■ong as he was connected with tha Board that he would not tolerate any Irrogulartlle*. He called the County Board of Elections' at tentlon to tb'. fact that challeng era. bearing certificates from tbe County Board of Elections w*r* used In the Sea Isle City election last week. He demanded that an Investigation be mad* aa the County Board of Elections baa not Issued any challenger certificate* since last fall for Sea Isle City.
