Queer Jungle Calls of Dahomey Natives When the barefooted black men travel In their own country they move aa silently aa specters. If they are not talking, or singing, or shrilly calling to each other, one does not bear them approach unless It be by the low rustle of their bodies against the leave*. On such occasion a file of t winding through the busbee jests a party of shades bourn some Stygian expedition. “O-Kou! O-Kou! O-Kou I" That Is the Jungle greeting of the Dahomey black man. Aa soon aa two travelers catch eight of each other In the distance they begin to shout this call. As they approach they lower their voices until the “O-Kou!" sinks to a mere murmur as they pass; then It rise* again louder and louder as they separate until lost In the distance. "O-Kou! O-Kou! O-Kou!" A greeting filled with fear. Doubtless It meant something like this: *T know where you are I I know wb you are!”—Henri de Kerillls L’Echo de Paris.
