Ocean City Fircn^en Test Safety Devices Wffl Be Drilled Weekly i* the rf Ltfe Baring Apparatus (Held Over From Last Week) . v *auF people were attracted tv the City Hall courtyard Tueedty afternoon while the firemen, under the direction of Chief Conover, were instructed !n the use of life lines, safety belts and other equipment used In fighting fire* at dlxxy heights. With the advent of many of tha higher buildings in Ocean City, Chief Conver decided the men should have special instruction in the method of combating fires in higher bulldlnge. The book and ladder truck was driven into the courtyard and ladders were hoisted to the tower on the south corner of the City Hall. Tble is about four stories in height. Firemen were sent scampering up the ladders to the roof with boss and other equipment. Ladder* were hoisted from the ground to the roof. A rope line was fastened to the roof ana the firemen slid to the ground testing a safety device which permits them to slide down a rope with one hand free. This device la attached to a belt, and the rope pemee through a clamp. A alight pressure on the damp checks the descent of the fireman. The particular feature that ap- . ala to the Arabian is that with one hand free rescues of eompenions or victims overcome with smoke is easy compared to the old methods. The preeaure on the safety clamp is sufficient to check or suspend a fireman and the per-
son he te earylng anywhere on the line. A fireman can, with this devi'e. in an emergency be lowered, reach In a window, grasp a person trapped In the room and lower himself to the floor below or any other floor without sliding to the ground. The use of the life gun was then demonstrated. This gun is capable of shooting a projectile over the tallest building in Ocean City. Attached to the projectile is a Una. Whan the projectile la fired over the building the firemen on tha top of the building can haul up a Ufa line, hoee or any other neceeaary equipment. It. can also be used in reecuing per•*ons from burning buildings when it is Impossible to get a life line to them in any other manner. A life net was then spread in the front of the City Hall. Each fireman leaped from the third story window of the building into the life net in safety. This demonstration attracted hundreds of persons. Chief Conver stated such drills
