Annual Debt To Crooks Dr. B. F. Bat tin. resident vicepresident of the National Surety Cmnpany, addressed the Wildwood Kiwanie Club on “The Two Billion Dollar Crime Wave," at the weekly luncheon of the club on *3Before entering upon his subject, Dr. Battln predicted that aome day there will be built an overhead boulevard from Sandy Hook to Cape May, which will afford motorists a tour that will not be surpass—' in this eonotry and which will result In a tremendous Increase In resort prosperity. He expressed the hope that It wlU be a double decker, with ample width. *to enable motoriafts to make high speed. Dr. Battln declared two billion dollars to ba a conservative cellmate of the amount this country turm over to crooks, without a penny’s return, annually. It la much over that amount, Franklin D. Roosevelt eetlmaUag It to be ten billions. He Includes cost of penal Institutions, courts, asylums, etc. Buslneea knows It must fight to decrease that loea. Two hundred yean ago the world was not ready for the surety business, the Insuring of a person's honesty. Last year the eighty surety companies wrote one-half a billion dollars In premiums. Dr. Battln touched upon annual laeeee through crime, giving the following conservative estimates: Fidelity (tbe guaranteeing of an Individual) 9200,000,000; burglary, banditry, larceny, bold up. $200,000,000; forgery, over $200,090,000; real eatate, $100,000,000; insurance frauds, fake clakns, $200,000,000; uafalr merchandise (the sale of goods not what they arc represented to be). $600,000,000. Fake bankruptcy and worthless Investments were also mentioned, the latter. In the New York city district alone, totaling one-half billion dollars annually. The great majority of people are honest, said Dr. Battln. A recent cheek on seven million bonded people showed that only 19.000 (less than one per cent.)

thousand of these deliberately set out to be. The standards of American business life are high, asid. Trusted men In one's employe should be bonded, said Dr. Battln. for it Is the trusted men who turn dishonest. Nine-tenths of the losses in fidelity sad hold up could be prevented by better accounting, making payrolls by check and treater caution In who la trusted with the money. The Holmee-Baker Orel eetra. playing at Wildwood Crest, this season, furnished a pleasing musical program. Frank Lloyd and Learning Rice *ere given birthday gifts. Bob Latimer welcomed tbe guest* and tang *T’m Wild About Wildwood.” The attendance prise was won by Bobert Kay Past president Herbert Doughtv. now a resident of Ca: ibridge. Ohio, where he Is managing a division of tbe Electric Company, of that State, was present and received an ovation. He gave a abort talk In which lie said many fine things abou* Wildwood and also boosted bis nee* "borne town.”

Many people are attempUng to lift a mortgage while riding around In It.

Farmers Will Stage Produce Show in Fall (Continned from Page One) stage the agricultural exhibit to be known as the "Cape May County Farm Produce Show." Professor S. E. Stone, head of the County Vocational School, stated that the school would contribute $100 toward prixea for tbe show, and that the State Department of Agriculture would contribute another $100. He stated that prominent speakers could be secured for the show, and tbe sentiment of the Grange was that this show would make a very good substitute for tbe annual fair, as it will be held Indoors and In surroundings that will prove more attractive even than the fair. The date of the show was left to the committee, but it U tentatively planned to bold the show the latter part of September. Soil Improvement Discussed At Thursday's picnic. Professor Stone and Professor Reeves, of the Vocational School, explained the work of the school and the need for soil Improvement In this county and of tree spraying. Mr. Stone stated that fifty orchards had been sprayed this year by the Vocational 1 School spraying machine, after It bad finished Its school work, and said that any farmer whe wishes to take advantage of this machine which is the only practical method of spraying, could do so by applying at the school and they would send a boy with It to help. Eight thousand gallons of spray was used this season, be said. The next question discussed was soil improvement, vetch being the thing to plant and 25 pounds to the acre should be used. Tbe third and last question of much Importance was the fact that Cape May County farmers should plant their own seed potatoes and The question of which was the best spray for potatoes was asked get them in the first of August and Prof. Reeves stated that they found the dry spray better potatoes here. Among the many fine displays of various vegetables and fruits, a cantaloupe exhibited by Mr. F. W. Sears caused considerable comment and great Interest The Grand Rapid melon, weighing 13 pounds, was indeed a beauty. After a very fine luncheon served on the camp grounds, the meeting was »g*'r called to order by the chairman for the afternoon session. Senator Agans Speaker A great surprise yt** in atot those gathered In the selection of speakers. The Grand Master of the State Grange. David H. Agans. State Senator /rout Hunterdon County, was present and gave a wrring address on the Bute of Nee Jersey. His hearers felt that they could almost start out to conquer the world, because of living In this wonderful state. Mr. Agans was an Insp4ration, not only to every farmer present, but to everyone, his sincerity of speech and pride in the Bute which la Indeed worthy of It, was felt by all present, and everybody who might have been a knocker bad It all knocked out of them and went aw* y a booster for Cape May County and a booster for their

~ ate.

Prof. F. G. Kclysr. director of the course at tbe State Agricultural College gave a splendid and concise idea of the profit and opportunity any boy would derive by taking this so-called “post graduate” course, which Is not In any way In competition with the County Vocational School. A boy after taking this shert course compares In his line, farming, with a boy graduating from the universities

PfC 8ct« in any of the many professions. Bureau Helps Fanners The next speaker introduced was H. C. Taylor, owner el two large farms and Secretary of the Bureau of Foreign Agriculture. After hear* ing Mr. Taylor explain the numerous interests that the bureau takes care of for the farmer, all were convinced that it is well worth the membership charge of five dollars Mr. Taylor conceived the idea of buying gas and oil wholesale for farmers and finally arranged with the Gulf Company the method of purchasing gas and oil from the company and paying for it, receipts are mailed to the Bureau of Foreign Agriculture, and when he has bought enough to amount to on* carload, they will mall him a check for 10 per cent discount on his money, saving h.m $10.00 on every hundred he spends for gasoline and oil. A reading was given by Gladys Howell, of Cold Spring Grange, Dias Creek, which was very amusing and appreciated by the men pr**< •*., the topic being "Buttons Off." Captain Gandy, of Tuckahoe, recited a poem which met with gales of laughter, and then Mr. Gandy was prevailed upon to tell about the time he killed a hog. Those not there missed a good laugh Indeed, following the Captain and his family through a graphic description of this feat Among the visitors at the picnic as Mrs. Reese P. Rlsley. of Atlantic City, former Pomona of tbe County Grange; Series of the State Grange and Master of tL« Stone Harbor Grange.

Florence Davis Catapulted Through Auto Windshield (Continued from Page One) were turned to "go” unUl the cab had passed by. So paced by reIvs of the State police tbe speeding taxicab reached the boulevard entrance to Atlantic City before dawn. At the shore reaort city policemen performed the seme service for the girl's parents and expedited the race.to her side. In leee than one hour and forty mlnutee from the time they had left their home the parents were with their daughter. Dies After Pcrents’ Arrival Miss Davis was recovering from the anesthetic. For about 10 minutes she wss conscious and able to talk with them. Then she

died.

Detectives from the Prosecutor's office placed Mayer under arrest on s technical charge of manslaughter. while the others were held as material witnesses, under $200 bond, after the accident.
