membering Anne, my dignity turned. I sat on the top of the ladder and regarded hkn with eyes. 1 must have as! usual platitadaa sad then he asked If he might ec "Certainly,’ Then it oocaried to me him why ha was here. Oh, fee lust ret: longed to see how things going at the plant. The Clanceys are my special fries dm so 1 thought Td drop la. ” by the ' their ' and the _ _ “Tea. Lord knows how we'd a gotten along at tals tryln' time.'' I was ooeered with tad tried to stop her but she kept right oa. Curtin seemed to hang os her words. "Her a gein’ both day nU’ht and a ms kin' the house a fit place for a queen," she continued. "aiMi. per used to a Ufe of curds and whey.' ” "Really. Mrs. Ciancey. if you don't stop I'll be <rery uncomfortable. Please now." I pleaded and then 1 noticed that Curtiss was sniffing the air. "Great Heavens!" 1 exclaimed, "the potatoes I put In the store! Now they're burned." I flew into the kitchen and when 1 come back Curtin had his chair by the bed room door and he and Mrs. Ciancey were closely engaged. At my step, a significant silence prevail-
ed.
"You're looking most gloriously well." Curtin came over to where I sat on the window seat and touched my apron with hi* hand. "1 never thought I'd see you in one of these. It’s most becoming though." For the first time. 1 realised I had on my pink and blue apron. In a twinkling, my vanity returned. I pulled It off quickly and fluffed up my hair. Besides keeping the Clanceys out of mischief, where have you been all the time?" Right be;* al* haven't budded.' i replied. "And you. haven't you been out of town?" (Aa If 1 hadn't known it trtsn the very day he had gone.) 'Yes, but I scanned the papers every day and I've never once That was queer. Then he had been slightly Interested In my movements even though he was engaged to Anne. It was such happiness to be
with him again; to feel hla nearness and to thrill to the rich, stirring tonss of his voice. But. oh I no* rra«»b,r Aoo,. Bo*<In. where WAS my pride?" "Did you find California warm thla time of the year?" I asked, trying to make my conversation impersonally polite. "Tes. deuced ly so. compared ~ Florida. I wouldn't have stayed except that I wanted to dispose of my property there." "You mean your hoi— ebouldn have asked the question but how eager I was for his re-
ply.
“Yaa. I have no use for It nov I was grateful for that for had not been able to bear t thought of him taking Anne there. We had talked of spending OUR honeymoon In hU house on the Padfle coast. There was a glaar room overlooking the ocean. A huge fireplace that burned greet crackling logs Trees that whlaNcrets of ancient paaing stocks-toseed days and nights when the moon rimmed the hortnon In n glory of pale gold. Then he would tak* Anne to some other home. At the thought of her. I grew strangely silent and all the hurt sad disappointment of the past few months returned. The Clanceys have fallen In love with you." he said, "and no wonder.” looking at me with frank admiration In his eyes. would come here to pay his pretty tying compliments to me and tonight would hold Anne Coddlngtou In klr arms. The thought was unbearable. The unbounded enthusiasm I usd felt st the unexpected meeting with him gave place to chlld- ~ less that gradually enveloped T heart. "Sallle." he began, "there's something I want to tell you. It's most fcnportan' to my happiness. Will you listen?" There was earnest entreaty in his voice. A motherly instinct, as well as my uncontrollable love for him made me long to gather him in my arms and have him unburden his soul. But there wss the thought of Anne and that creeping coldness about my heart. "I’m sorry but I can't let those potatoes burn sgaln on your account. You see the Clanceys won't let me do anything for them financially and the family budget is in my hands. So if you'll ex- | cuse me. I’ll say good bye." (To be continued)
