Do You Know?
Nobody has ever been sent 10 the electric chair from Cape May County. While this speaks well for the behavior of the residents of the county as a whole, nevertheless there Is a reluctance among the Jurors of the county to Inflict the supreme penalty. Probably the youthful Tuckahoe bank bandits. who looted that Institution about a year ago and killed one of the directors, came closer to the chair than anybody. Feeling ran high when they were first called to trial, but through a technicality, furmer Senator Lewis T. Stevens, who represented them, had the case postponed. The postponement, many aver, aided materially in winning a life sentence for the trio. The last person In the county to pay the supreme penalty was a colored murderer, who was hanged about thirty years ago during the late "Bob" Hands's term as Sheriff. Hand had at. aversion to springing the trap to send a man to his doom and engaged an Atlantic County hangsman for the Job. The kaqgsman appeared on the scene too Intoxicated lo be of any service and Sheriff Hand accomplished the distasteful operation. That, of course, was long before prohibition.
