The baseball Reason is well undemrgy in Ocean City and' the fans arc daily enjoying the games being played at Municipal Field by the Ocean City Riviera team. This particular story isn’t about tbit ball dub. however, although we consider it a good one, but concerning the man who has made pc»ibk the conducting of high-dass baseball here this summer—Ralph Chester, the sponsor of Riviera town. Last.^THursday 'hr season opened with great ceremony and gusto. Everything tltat goes with a big league opening was put an with the ctmattieS. The only disagreeable feature about an otherwise pleasant afternoon was the fact that Chester defeated the new team. Before i#e go further with this story, let's go back to the game for a moment. The sec re was tied, two men were out, die bases were ktigted and Shefrid, the local pitcher, had a two and two count on Herb Steen, the Chester dugger. Sherrid bent one over the inside of the plate and a mighty uproar greeted the decision of Umpire ' ‘Sell that th- ball had not crossed the plate. To everyone in the t it apparently had been ^strike by a wide margin. Had it so called the inning would have ended and the Chester team utould not have scored the four runs wt.rch gave them the game, lit' the Ocean City half of the same inning, the bases were loaded rad Charley Gault watched a third strike pass. Many thought that' . this should have been called a bali.
ff’r aren't trying to rensuif the umpires regarding eithe.- of these decisions. From viftt'e vie were sitting fie couldn't see clearly even though we might want to dispute it.

Lesson in S**o«tsmansh!»

After the game a number of friends of Mr. Chester gathered to congratulate him op the successful opening day and to condole with him for the failure of his club to win the contest. Someone brought out the fact that these two decisions by the umpire behind tbe plate had seriously affected the result of the game, if not being I the direct -cause of the loss of the contest. The reply of the man who is trios; vitrlly interested in the ateerts and failur? of baseball here this season is s fine ffsson in Enae sportsmanship: “If there were to be any questionable decisions, IV. glad that they were against us rather than the other way.” Nothing would have pleased Mr. Chester more than to win this opening itame. There is little doubt but that he felt keenly the deff*t, but tV attitude he took regarding the result shows the real ^ make up of the man who is fostering baseball here this summer.
At the bouquet given by Mr. Chester to the players and several guests after the game, both umpires made short tpeechet in which they slated that Chester had directed them to "call them as you tee them." anj both stated that they would do to regardless of which side might benefit. Connie and Bcckv Feeling Bli e
There isn’t a great deal of joy in the camp of the Washington ‘ Club, which visits this resort today with only three pitchers who may be considered as starting butlers. The failure of Joe Bush sure put a decided crimp in the pennant hopes of the Senators. Bullet Joe was recently released and has since sold himself to the Pirates. Bush came to the Washington Club this year with Outfielder Johnny Tobin from St. iA>u«, in return for Zachary and Win Ikllou. Tobin left {hem shortly after Bush with his unconditional release ind now Bucky Harris has nothing to show for the trade, while both Zachary and Ballou I'r pitching fairly good ball for ^lanager Stsler in St. 2<oui*. Connie Mack isn’t feeling any too good either, at the present timr, over his recent d'-al with the Boston and St. Loub teams, and Until Howard Ehmkr shows some real improvement Connie it going to hear plenty of censure from the Philadelphia fans. Mack gave Bing Miller, ttv leading hitter of hi* team, to St. Lpuis for Bill Jacobson, and the move was applauded because Philadelphia fans admired the big Brown outfielder and welcomed him to Shibe Park. But Bill never reached here and was sidetracked to the Red Sox along with Slim Harris* and Freddie Hrimach for Ehmkr. Both Miller and Jacobson have ben big factors in the recent stgrcaaes of tlieir new teams, while Slim in his first start set down Washington with five hits aud a single run. Ehmkr. who lias won three games this season, was batted out of the box early in his first ; two ttsrts for the House of Msck. Tad Howard may still br of ute to the A't. but then again hr may be of me value, for as a member of the Red * Sex this year hr was good only against the Mackmen.
