The cotiiplebon of ttu, projrsm, in connection with the hrtd surfwng of the Ocean Cmhomers Point Road, will pkee Cape May County in a splendid position so far as routes of in*r«» and egress are concerned, *nd this will be further improved by the building ot the proposed Betslry’s Point bridge. With this splendid network oi highways provided by the State, to the county to lay

tor completing the

hsnd surfaced highways leading into the resorts and then ronnectw* then; tjgetber with the Shore Boulevard. Ocean City, Wildwood and Cape May are Provided with hard surfaced roads leading m thow re.«,rt« from the State highway. Sea Isle City, Avalon and Stone Harbor need such connecting roads and need them badly. They cannot be built too soon. After the*- are provided the completion ot the ocean front boulevard should be pushed, the next logical link being the Townsend's Inlet bridge. The building of this bridge would connect the four northern resorts of the county and would prove a wonder) ul saver of time and money, a consideration which Major Sloan has taken into first .'onsideration in plar.rjng his sys-, ton of roads for the consideration o? the State Highway Commission

and legislature.

With such a system of highways the growth of Cape May County and is-i seashore resorts would be a marvel that even we di- 1 of today cannot fully Virion

OFF-YEAR ELECTIOH OFF-YEAR VOTE Despite the constant criticism of newspapers and public leaders, the electorate of the country become more negligent in exercising their right of suffrage and the task o! arousing them to a sense of .-heir responsibility and the duty they owe their country appears to be a hopeless one. The compilation by die New Jersey State Board ot Canvassers of the vote cast in this State at the recent election shows that out registration of 1,27:5,468. hui 852,610 took the trouble to vote, or about two-thirds. These figx a reduction of 33,206 from the registration of the preyear and a reduction of 78,730 in the vote east. It will thus be seen that by year the voters are taking less interest in public affairs and leav ing their conduct to a few self constituted leaders, who put up such candidates for office as their purposes and will do their bidding. An I even the 1925 registration figures are far below what should be a normal rrgistra-

m.

It is figures such as these that gives the advocates of a return the old convention system their strongest argument and makes it hard for such good men as former Senator Frrlinghuysm to make headway in his advocacy of the retention of the primary system. If Mr. Frelinghuysen can evolve guaranteed plan for getting the people to exercise the right of suffrage he will have no trouble n swinging public op'iion to his if»v - .... The people, as a body are not opposed to the primary such, they are only opposed to it btis an expensive piece of election machinery t ** the voters il to make use of. The illegal expenditure, and enormous necessary expenditures ■which ace charggd up against the system could be prevented and cut down if the voter* would only exercise the power it confers upon them. Until this is done the primary cannot regain the hold on public opinion which it has lost.
