SHERIFF HOFFXAH SHOULD EXPLADi

When the 330 cates of alcohol

for which the tax-pa yen of Cape May County paid more than $1100 to have ffuarded for some thing like a year it distributed

among various hospitals,

supposed the case, which had caused much comment, was closed and turn written across the last page, but not so. Sheriff James T. Hoffman opened the cate again last week when he furnished only two papers of the county, so far as we have been able to learn, with the following letter:

The article published In your paper, week of March 9. 1927. waa a report made by me to the Board of Freeholders . as to the fliml disposition oi the alcohol that had been slored In the garaiee at the Cape May count) Jail. In reference to the ' Higher Upe" I had no direct knowledge. This statement was not Intended to cast any reflections "n the

Prosecutor's office.

t Henry H. Eldrrdge to the Judgeship of this county, despite senatorial courtesy and blind political obstinacy, (Jovrrnor [Moore has not only done hurarli credit; but be has aided in elevating the Judiciary and still 1 further divorcing it from parti|san politics, with which it should have no connection whatever The man who i» otherwise qualified snd holds the wales of justice with an even hand entitled to remain on the bench and politicians and otiice-hoiden. whether of high or low degree, should have it nude plain them that in playing the game their hands must hr kept oft the

judiciary.

We congratulate Judge Eldredge on his reappointment and shall look for the same impartial dispensation of justice at his hands in the future as in the past and are confident we shall noi be disappointed.

of Freeholders explaining the bill for watchman's service! and in which he took occasion to make

an attack on the County Prosecutor, blaming that official for the need of running up the bill, he had prepared copies of his statement ready to hand out to all representatives of the press, with the evident object of obtaining as much publirity as possible for the explanation and attack, but when it comes to making what amounts to a retraction of his criticism of Prosecutor Campbell, Mr. Hoffman singles two papers of the county in which to seek publicity. Certain that this paper did not receive a copy of the retraction, although it was favored with a copy of the Sheriff's first statement. Why this discrimination? Didr t the Sheriff want as much publicity for the retraction

as for the attack?

If this was not the reason then the Sheriff needs to enligtiT'n
