LOST WITH HONOR Cape May Went Down Before the Wynoefield Crowd

WAS A GOOD GAME

Evwly MslcKd snd ThorougKly Enjoyed by tHe SperUtors 01 Stockton Liwn

« *rR MAY. 4: WYXNKFUU-l' RiKhleen men tn uniform, nine on one «ide. nine on t’other, capered about Stockton baarball diamond Saturday, while a man in a »lra'» hat and citlren> clothe* acted a< buffer betw een the sides and settled their disputes. All this was done to entertain' lovers of the national game there prea< and tt is only fair to say suoeeeded, It was a good exhibition of amateur baseball. The teams were so evenly matched that it was anybody's game until the last man went out In the ninth inning. Both pitchers gave good accounts of themselves .and while the support given them was at tinve* ragged, still it was a toss up which aide fielded best, or worst, and the contest was interesting throughout. Cape May is w eak in biwe running, and ao were the visitor*. Unhappily efir young men, once they have gained a base, fall tn love with it and seem 40 want to stay there. There is but one place In ' the runner’s Journey that counts, and that U the home plate. Too many Cape May player* are left on base* because of the over-careful-nws of the runner*. It Is belter to bp put out in a well Judgedlfforttto ateal a base than to be left on the bag when a tally might have been made by a little quick work and daring. Umpire Domer was fair to both rides. There is always a good deal of fault found by “fans’’ with umpires at ail base ball games. There was Uttle of this Saturday, and none at all deaerved. The work of the umpire was vastly superior to that ordina. ly seen on amateur grounds. Some cf the “strikes" be called seemed to be loo high to those at the plate, but his plate , decisions were on the whole sound. One rather close decision at 1st base caused aome dispute, but the Judgments* the umpire appeared correct to the onlookers. Mr. Dorner did himself credit. It is all fight to say Cape May lost by erroc*. Of course, but-it is noticable (hat error* were likewise made by, the visitors. The plain facta are that the game was in doubt ail the way, and it U a safe dollar to doughnut Let that the man who kick* over Saturday’s baseball exhibition is the one who was too busy watching the game to see the hat when it was passed for expense money. ^ Amateur baseball is sport for sport’s sake. It i* not performed by an aggregation of hired men who make a b.ixinoOT of it and play every day. There is a good deal more life and : r-.ap sen In -these amateur contests' than fu professional games and certeinly it is more clearly sport. Manager Hughe* and his hall towers arc serving a good article of baseball, a id that their efforts are appreciated by the spectator* was evidenced by thrir hearty applause. The crowd cli^Kd impartially good play* on ei .ner side, but it i* human nature lorn ant your own club to win, md it is too had, but no discredit lo our young men, that it did not. The score: CAPS MAY. K. H. O. A. M.

Tjro locomotive* meeting head and hurled from the track, with the liaggage car attached to one of them, and the passenger* of a train bound from Philadetohia for Ufcean City in a stale of wild terror, gave added 'excitement to the severe electrical storm ihal'preiailed at, Sc* Isle Junction about three o’clock on Saturday aflerThr co 1 Hson, ascribed by the railroad •ulhoritie* to the storm that obstructed the view of one of the engineers and caused him to run by his proper station at the Junction Sw itches and between the frain that left Cape May at 2J0 p. m. for Philadelphia and the Saturday Ocean City expires, which left Philadelphia at 1 JO

Both locomitive* and the ir of the Cajie May train were derailed. The train from Philadelphia, loaded with excundooisu for Ocean City was 24 minute* late o<| account of the storm, and the two trains had orders to meet at Sea Isle Junction. They were both running slowly when the crash came, and to this Is due the fact that none of the passengers received injuries that fcquired the attention of a physician, though all were shaken up and thoroughly fright»ed. As a consequence all traffic was delayed the balance of Saturday. The four remaining express trains due in Cape May were held up and their passengers transferred around the wreckage. Many of them did not reach Cape May until after 8 p. m, causing them a delay of two hours.

Katurday wan president's day at the Cape May Golf Club. The regular weekly handicap medal play Umroey and the riootch foursome were waived for the contest for the Edwin F. Cook Cup. Ferdinand Graves and several other lower handicap men did not come up to their usual standard and R. Norris Williams, the secretary of the club, finally won over Louis H. Ayra and Henry Maria with a net 78. Williams’s victory was the most popular in the list at the club. It is not the custom at the local club to. change handicap between the Saturday tourneys, but Williams is the chairman of the handicap committee, and as bt made a big improvement in his garni' during tl)c week.be voluntarily cut his allowance thioe strokes, which made his score more praisworthy.

KIERNAN READINGS l Fashionable Audience Listened to Red tala. George Kieman, the reader, presentd on Saturday evening lo an audince which filled the music room of ’ongrere Hall to overflowing representations of the acting of Joseph Jeffcrnd William J. Florence in “Bob i.” His presentation was well worth seeing, as many in the audi>ce who hail seen Joe Jefferson prosunoed his imitation as splendid. The stage demeanor of Jefferson was imitated to perfection, said those w ho iw him who had seen Jefferson. too. Those who had never seen Jefferson, after tbe explanation of the drama, were repaid for their attendance in getting an insight to the production and a most excellent idea of the great artists which have presented it on the melropolitian stage. Owing to a train wreck, Mr. Hitman was not able to use his foollighl paraphenalia, and thus somewhat interfered with his imitating the great actor, although none of the audience knew of the missing footlights. Only the Herald man knew of this. U Mr. Kiernan coaid have done better than on ttaturday night, the eudiconld not have seen any more than in seeing Joe Jefferron himself. i audience, which appreciated the Imitations, was made np of the most prominent of the summer cottagers and residents. Mr. Kiernan will present imitations of Jefferson in “The Rivals” at CongresrHaH next Saturday night.
