A member of the Foplar borough

council once suggested that the government should aid |he unemployed by

starting to build a road right round the ^ lu , _ coast, of England and Scotland. Nat- ; ElfreibTc K

urally enough, the goremment would " not listen to such a scheme. They conaldered It a* wild and Impracticable as one suggested to them by an old gentleman a little time previously. ThU man wanted the government to marshal aH the unemployed In Ixmdon and the provinces in brigade* and employ them In erecting enormous high walls 1c various part* of the country. The walls were to be of sufficient height to arrest the clouds. In this way the rainfall would lie modified, and hundred* of acre* of waste land would

be rendered fit for cultivation. A little wbH? back another crank

suggested .that all the unemployed should lie taken over to the Sahara desert and set to work to convert that giant blot upon the map Into an Inland sea by cutting a number of canals. If thl* were done, he said.-ships would be able to sail down to fertile regions now unapproachable and which must he worth hundreds of millions of

pounds.

A labor M. F. suggested at a public meeting some time ago that national workshops should lie eitablisbed In every city In England, Scotland. Ireland and Wale* wherein any man could claim work and good wages as a matter of right. There was nothing particularly novel In this suggestion. Tears ago national workshops were opened in Paris, and It was expected that they would solve the unemployed problem. No sooner were the workshops thrown open than the Idle and the Incompetent flocked lnl-> the capital from every quarter of France and claimed work. Under the circumstances the government thought It wise to close the, workshops. The result a riot. It which se>xral thousands of persons were killed %id wounded, soil nearly Xl.-'/OO.OOO worth of property --Was destroyed.-London Graphic.
