The Orel burrtar of treasury vaults, to far as known to history, occurred wbrn tihampelnltna was king of Egypt. He poetess ad so much money that none of the kings rvlgr^e after
him In Egypt ’
Thinking »o have bis treasure safely ket-t. he bad constructed tbe best burglar proof vault that the builders of that day knew how to make- a solid chamber of etone. The builder fitted one of the stones^® that It might be exceptionally atrong. After the pb-tlon of this chamber tbe king laid his treaeure* In It thinking them aaf« from designing bauds. Bui when tb< builder came to die he called his tw< sous and directed them how they might get the king's Hebes. After bis death tbe sons went t< palace, quickly removed tbe stone In the wall and aim oat depleted tbe king's vessels of tbetr money and treasure. When the king opened the vanlt be found It nearly empty, yet the seals on the entrance door Were unbroken and tbe chamber apparently secure. He determined to set a trap. He aealed It as before Again and again be broke thr seals, each time finding tbe precious treasure diminished, and then be bad traps put about tbe treasure ccptncle*. One day tbe trap canght Its victim, and. the man being unable ‘ free himself, he ordered his brother - cut off and carry away his bead that both should not be ruined by tbe disaster. This was done by one stroke of ' the other’s sword. The next day the king cam* found tbe bendless body of a ms tbe trap, while tbe chamber was apparently without means of exit Much mystified, be had tbe headless holy suspended from a gallows In full view of. tbe populace, thinking that possibly the dead man's relatives would betray themselves by tbeir agitation at the spectacle. Then a new difficulty arose for tbe remaining son. His mother ramded him to cat down tbe body and bring It to -her. else abe would exiwse him to tbe king. After a little time be succeeded in giving the king's aentrirs ■‘knockout drops" and took hla brother's corpse to hla mother. The king was angrier than ever, not only Iwraoae of the theft of hla treasure, hut because of the disappearance of the Indy of one of tbe villains. Then hla daughter was act to catch tbe thief. She was to sc lie him by the arm. yelling furiously when be should reveal himself. The young mao beard of the plot however, and circumvented It He took with an arm rut from the corpse, and when abe aeixed Ntn be placed It In ' - hand and escaped. This last Incident made the king think some, lie wisely concluded that a clever -thief Ilka this would be a Iwtter ally than an enemy. So he Issued a proclamation offering tbe robber pardon and hi* daughter for a wife If be would reveal himself. This
