•Wht does Cape May bathe at at This b the question which staggei
Dwight, not the president ‘of Yale College, as has been reported, bat kb ] brother, a gentleman of wealth and leisure and very observant, who b enjoying Cap* May life under the most faror-
withtn our many year* of Cape May journalistic experience." But thb does not satisfactorily answer the question "Why?” Well, ve suppose it is considered the most convenient hour for the majority of Cape May guests. Thb b true, however, only when ve accept as conclusive the statement that Cape May's guests are here, wholly for the sake of pleasure and that the healthgiving properties of the bath in old ocean is considered a secondary matter. Else, why not bathe in the early morning, when the air b most balmy, cool and in vigorsting and before the water, under the influence of the sun, has lost that crispness and temperature which b sobracing? Why not revolutionise the old-established custom and have two bathing periods during the day, one for health seekers, who want a brisk bath and the bracing tonic of the morning air, between T and 9; another for pleasure seekers, who desire the exhilaration of companionship and Sir—, veil, aay the presence of all who compose our Cape May world, to witness their enjoyment and to participate In their pleasure at the usual hour*—11 to 1 o'clock. At Cape May any hour b a goad one for bathing so far as the ocean and its conditions are concerned. This U one of the Queen city’s advantages. Shall we revolute, ladies and gentlemen, or follow the custom of the forefather* ? It b a question worthy of consideration. Let u* have, for the novelty of it, the the two bsthinghour*. The bath house keepers will serve the early risers with great pleasure if due and timely notice be given. ® WATER RATES. The water ordinance passed by Council last spring has made some diflrrrnre in the rate charged public plares like stables, bar-rooms, oyster bars, laundries and hotels, and has, of course, given use to discussion and complaint. We, therefore, sought information on the subject from Superintendent Douglas. and he informed us that the principal changes in the rates have been made in order to secure a more equitable distribution of the assessments, which, by the way, are made by the superintendent hlmseKT Overcharges, when complained of, are promptly made righL The cottage rate 1* about the same as usual, in fact, a little lower, In some cases oyster bar* are required to p*y (10 when the spigot b in the bar and (5 when it is not, the supposition being that the city water must be obtained indirectly when not obtained directly. Liquor bars pay the same price. Laundries are asaesaed at from (.1 to MO, according to the amount of work. Stables, (1 per stall for any number over five «tall». or (6 for five stalls or less. Hotels, hydrant, (6 ; bar, (10 : wash basins, (2 each. No premise** are assessed for less than (8. Under the old law all laundries were charged alike, (10, but thb was so that the new rate* were made. The superintendent 1* always ready to courteously explain anything in connection with water matters.
Council Proceedings regular meeting of City Council* held at the Council chamber last -evening, at which all the chy fathers were present After the routine business had been attended to, a resolution granting a license to Ludwig Philip Koenig to sell intoxicants at the Inlet House was passed. A communication from Bt Margaret's Home asked a rvliate of taxes because of its bring a charitable institution. Ilcferred to Judiciary Committee, with power to act. James J. Dusk asked to he appointed a special detective with police poser, without pay, until January 1, 1890.
