Sometbiko, at leait aboald tic done with Oie broken pavement on Perry atmet by the burned ground* of the Columbia. The drbria aboald moved back irom the aidewalk aod the pavement repaired. Tbla walk ii mac uted, and pedeatrian* aboald not I oompelled to travel over aacb a rough highway to reach the beach. ■ Tine hackmen for ourr have Wn aerved a* they aboald % have been. A few day* before the arrival of the jourualM* Mr. Barkidale. of the railroad company, made an arrangement, at a fair price, with the hark driver* to convey the excurakeiiata from the Sea Breeze to the Stockton. Shame re*t» on a few who called a hurried conaultation juat before the train arrived, at which the price wa* doubled, and on the other* equally a* much for aoqnleaeing in the movement. They thought they hail the bird in' the cage before It wa* caught. Aa a reault the ekeundoniat* walked the board walk to the hotel. If they had taken the party. 27&, at the regular price, 85 cent*, they would liavc lieeii in pocket MS.75, but they made nothing. How it mu*t have grated upon the hack driver** conutitutiou* ! Will they ever do Mich an a We hope not. A rnomsEKT New York Democratic paper yesterday morning contained the important information that Mr*. Harrifcon, upon the advice of the Pre* id rut, had decided to give up the cottage Point. Thia led the Stak reporter call at the cottage, where he wa* i formed by her that *he had no such advice, and no auch intention*, and that the atatementwa* a falsehood. lan't it funny that these organa can' let anybody alone. They certainly cat not be called nnrtpaprn, and puhlb.li auch wanton He* a* these, to hart Mr*. Harrison'* comfort and Cape May * prosperity. They are no good the country anyway, only to preach purity, while aiding In corrupt deal* by telling half the truth so a* to mialead people Into aanctioulug their scheme*. No, Mrs. Harriaon la in a civilized and plraaant resort, ami we are sorry that people are so badly troubled about the cottage. Cape May la- not and Mr*. Harrison i* not. No decent New York journal la troubled. Who ought to I
then?
To one who 1* informed in detail Ita superior advantage*, it la very *i prising that Cape May ha* not grot much more rapidly in population and Improvement*. The United State* government report* have always shown with scientific certainty that our clilnate la super!-jr and most equable; it la a fact of world-wide prominence that our beach la the best drainage beach in the world; we have unequalled natural facilities fur bAhing; the best water which can be obtained for city use; an opportonity for the landing of steamer* immediately In front of our city, In addition to excellent nail road facilities, which are about to be Improved by the addition of a new line—In fact, everything which a seaside resort can have to help it to prosperity and growth, and yet though it ha* grown and is growing alowly but surely, other resort* with not a tithe of it* advantages an- puahlng ahead at a phenomenal rate. Why la this? Our answer 1* briefly that: 1. The world doesn't stop to discover, without assistance, the merit* of a place, but must have Ha attention called or It will pass It by, and Cape May has made practically no effort to attract attention for the past five year*. The Ides which seem* to prevail among it* buainea* men and some of ita property ownera is “We have the best resort and that U sufficient. If people have good judgment they will seek u* out." Of coarse. In this age of electricity, a team and the wonderful new power which Keely is endeavoring to capture; in this age of development, when our country la growing In population to ai which is wonderful, a place or business conducted on such a basis cannot be S. The word enterprise ha* formed cloak daring the past few years, under which one or more res! estate confidence operator* have Inveigled people Into dropping money on wlld-cat scheme* and have given some people abroad the ides that It la unsafe to Invest here. A correct one, too, If these confidence men are given the opportunity to manipulate it. This has retarded real progress, but the Star proposes to protect the people as much aa possible from these sharks hereafter by prompt and rigorous denunciation of any scheme which has the
advertiking.
