least greatly discourage, her efforts to uproot the garden. He calls it the Cor-
bett Excelsior Hen Hobble.
We trust that we need not enlarge to any grwit extent on the peculiar tactics —'-red by tho common hen in her campaign against a garden. Her stealthy tread. said that no fowls were ever known
tho Elizabeth islands in theSoqth Pacific until about thirty yi-afs ago. when a missionary frora Philade^ihia named Medintock idamcd a few garden seeds near his honsui but that\thereni>on every Unfortunafo heathen on the islands whit to Anstrulla and procured a hen. This, however, has no particular bearing
Mr. Corbetra invention. Interesting it may otherwise be, and wo hasten to give n short description of it. In the Excelsior hen hobble Mr. Corbett
attaches n/tring to the loft leg of tho hen. Tlrfs string connects with a bill clamp, which is Mstcncd to tho fowl's beak. Tilts liill damp, when I in R* normal condition, allows tho hen to open and shut fier la-ak with tho usual freedom, but tho ^lightest pressure on tin spring ftattses the clamp tp.close and pre vent nny further introduction of fowl into the hen's interior. Tho hen which is provided with nn Excelsior hobble starts out in tho morning with n light heart. She may indulge in tho low song peculiar to hens, and oven cackle. She
may, too, fill her crop with tho tious gravel and such ofher food :
,mny be able to find, but when she approaches the garden vJfeh tlie intention of scnitdiing tip Ihe surface of the earth
she liccomos aware that her freedom being tampered with. - - At tho first rearward stroke of her left
foot the string is drawn tuut, the spring is rdeasi.-d, arid tho clamp shuLs down with a snap and herjnetically doses her hill. /There is not, of course, any physical nia.*>u why tho hen may not go on scratdt^ng, hut tho hollowness of excavating worms and other fowl which she cannot thukc use of sjieedily dawns njxm her and she retires from tKb field. Unable to cackle or to masticate gravel she wanders nbont helpless 1411 she has been caught by her owner and. the damp released. A few trials soon show tlie intelligent hen .tho Utter abenrdity of attempting to do anything in tin* way of scratching when fitted with the Excelsior
hobble.
The only dilficulty which Mr. Corbett luis experienced with his invention so far is tho Impossibility of inducing hen owners to adopt it. Mr. Corbett is tho only man in iris neigkfeorhood who has a garden. There are some twenty men in tho immediate vicinity who keep hens Not one of these men can bo persuaded even to give the'hobble a trial. Mr. Corbett* however, secs his way clear. Legislation is what is .needed. With a law requiring hen owners to reduce their hens to n state of innocnonsness with his Excelsior fipn hobble, gardens will not only bo Safe but a lioom will be given to the stock in his manufacturing company. —New York Tribune.
