nod I’etrlOc* ■f Moaa. hi a dn-p. dark ravinj. In North Bearer townahii*. La wren re conntr, 1* a- phrnommon in tbeahap"- uf a im>wing rock. Fifty yrars nrn, when it wan first noticed, an inverted wooden pail wuold almost rarer it. Today it in a prml Txiwldor, hx 1 iir hoiuht "qY firy.-v-rt foot or Wire in rirrarnfmocy, and weighing not Ins than fifty tons. Daring the nmnm*T mouths it is covered with dense, rich room two or three inrhe* deep, through which tho waL-r from a sioing trickle* continually. so small at thi* m-aaon that a few patL of wat<-r di(i;K.d from it would drain it dry. But it works in a manner very differ* ut from the dripping water In caves that carrie* alntnlen of limmtuoe in solution with it, and Icarmi its wooden in stalagmit--* and stalactite*. - The outer formation of this rock hits a liiuvy-tone apl*-aranre, but once .remove tin-mow and chi-wl into the gritty surface, nisi the real be&nty and peculiarity of tlie rock is seen. A cellular f.>miation. like a mammoth sponge, is discovered, mnl about the calls U stone ns hard as iidaniatit. On ratting farther in. this cell-like rntbstance is found to continue, bat it seems to have been transformed into a translucent flint. This remarkable jietri faction has been wrought by the Action of the water from the *[iring npun the mosa. The water seems to have the singular property of tnniing into stone everything that is lirsnght in contact with It for any lengtti of time. It lias an add taste, and is donhtl.-w heavily charged with inineruK snbsUncvw. although thus far it lias never liven analyzed. The most remarkable fact about it is that it accomplish!* so much in no short n time. The mom grow* Inxuriantiy in the dark hollow, and the lapidracent cjnality of the vvat.T him operated year after year ni»m the layers of most, turning thorn into a honeycomb of stone, and adding to what was n» first a small rock, ntitil today there is this great bowlder of |s-tri-fied vegetation. A short time after the mow begins to grow in the spring it coiumetires to sobdifyat the roots and the ts trifaction follows closely on the tnu-k of the growing moss like tho formation of coral on the work of the coral in wets. As it progresses the ihtrk green of the vegetation tieennx-s yellowish, then rhaug*w to brown, and darkens ns tbe ruck grows older. The moss is not all that U peryictuaLd in stone by tho action of tho water. Plants, leaves, twigs, every vegetable snlntonce tliat has fallen on the rock and lain there has been impregnated .With it, and. ashy the tonch of jin inexorable fate, been turned into stone by it. Stratum upon stratum of the moss stone ha* grown over them, and many such objeettearv now to be fottpd hermetically sealed deep in the heart of the rock. ' To the mineralogist the rock is a mine of treasure and delight. No one ever chisels into that flinty IsiwWer without coming upon leaves and twig* ;«.• trifled among the muss and seenring many tine, sjieciments to rejoice his heart and make envious lew fortunate mortals. Those who have visited it Ihns far aay There is , not auothi-r aucheurv-sity known in the ' world. The people in the m-ighburliuod have long known uf the remarkable qualities of this spring. Mr*. William Alls wrath first discovered it nearly fifty years ago. Then the rock was ten feet or more below the spring. . Now it has climbed tip the side of the lutnk until it is partially above the level of the spring, and has turned tho water of tbe little brook tliat come* down the ravine somewhat out of Mr. ABswiirth and some of his neighIkit* intend to try the experiment of fastening a meg or some other creature iu such a way tliat the water will have a chance to act upon it. and see whether it will fill up animal tissnea with its mineral burden as it has done the vegetable ones that have come in continued contact with iL They firmly believe it will, and there seems little reason to doubt iL Heretofore the spring and the wonderful rock it has builded have been little known outside tho immediate neighborhood. Tbe little ravine where it is situated puts down through rough and broken country near tho Beaver river, and the wonder is difficult of aoce». This comparative iuaecensiUlity has saved it in large measure from the raids of relic hunters, and prevented the accumulations from being greatly disturbed. Now and then tbe cartons have vLited it. and of late a few geologists have studied it. and specimen* of the strange formation have been carried off, but tho bowlder shows no apparent diminution. The water still works its miracle of petrification. and will doubtless continue to do so as long at it lias a chance to act upon any being tia>uc.—New Castle Cor. Pittsburg Dinpatch. Some raise the objection that everyting i* n-w sold at so small a margin of profit that they cannot afford to advertise. This is just why they should advertise. Where is the advantage of selecting particularly cheap or offering especially great bargains if the people re not made aware of them! There is' ho questioning the fact that there is an hnmciwe amount of uioney was-.ed.'podtivcly thrown away, in so called advertising achcmcs that are ahno- ! lately worthh-**, and that fail utterly to bring tbe investor in them any returns whatever fur the money expended.
