story like the alsive.

-Wiiebe ha ire all the old patrons of the New Columbia found quarters tills season, now that the beautiful bouse lira in a heap of ruins?" senna t'l be a question often asked, but not always answered. Mr. Jiweph Strauss sol veil the matter the other evening, when br explained that, having been a guest, with hla family, at the Columbia for four seasons, be had no difficulty in identifying those who had likewise liecome regular patrons. Said be : ** I uM-d to follow Colonel Duffy, aud was with him from the Stocktou to Congress, and then I went to the New Columbia, for I liked the bouse and its location. Nuw, since It is destroyed. I come to the Congress, and especially do I like it now since the improvement of the lobby and '|wr!or; and I find a host of my former associates of the New Columbia, a large percentage of whom have come to Cojonel Cake. It is an ill wiutl that blows nobody any good, you are. Others. I think, go to the Lafayette, but the must of the former steady guests of the Columbia are right here at the Congress, a here we are wcli-carrd for and having a delightful stay, too." The season is at its height, as everybody here over yesterday must admit. Ho many people hare not been seen at Cape May over any Sunday for seven or eight years. Very heavy trains came in Saturday, arriving late with their lung freight of |iaaaeiigrra, and when the evening instalment was spread over the city, the work of rooming so many guests who desired quarters at the hotels soon began to teat the capacity of the bouses and the tart of the proprietors. How so many were accommodated after so many bouses were full and turning people away, it is difficult to Imagine, but one relief came by managers securing rooms outside for those who could not otherwise be taken. Congress Hall Is chock-a-block w ith four hundred ami fifty guests and turned many away, as did other houses. It Is a splendid'scaMm. mi far as numbers of visitors go, and good prices for board are generally being received, as compared with a few seasons back. There Is a boom on, partly tircauae of the terribly hot weather, but really from more general causes, and the general causes, aud the progress from this season on will be very noticeable. The postoffice business here this year is greatly In excess of any season in our history—another Indication, or proof, rather, of progress. There must be, as the 8ta« declared In a recent issue, additional houses erected to accommodate the business that will be upon us by *91. We do not believe that any more great hotels will be needed, but those of the medium sire which ate now so popular here. It may do for the Heading Kailroad Company to build a 9750.000 hotel at Atlantic City, as they contemplate, though we doubt the expediency even there, but it would not dost Cape May. The beach, the pier, the amusements, gave evidence of the great throngs in our midst, and the entire length of the bathing ground yesterday was a solid mass of human beings, with thousands rollicking In the surf enjoying the finest bathing, as to temperature of water, greudewr of sari aud other conditions.

delpbis's most widely known men, i re of the guests at Congreaa Hall. William J. Carroll, a prominent Balli-^ more business msu, will sojourn at* Congress several weeks. He passed a portion of last season here. Secretary Blaine remained quietly at the Preeideut's cottage yrsterdsy, until evening, when be went to Mr. Wanamaker's to take dinner. Postmaster-General Wanamaker attended the afternoon services at tbe Sea Side Home, Cape May Point, yesterday afternoon. P. M. Cody and H. II. Hedrick, of Bristol, Term, two enterprising gentlemen, are enjoying a sojourn at one of the best of onr hotels, the Lafayette. Dr. T. C. Ileyl, surgeon In tbe United State* Navy, sod broffW-ln-lsw to General Sewell, is enjoying Congress Hall com foils, accompanied by bis

wife.

Joseph H. Hlnkaon, s member of tbe McClure Uuu Club, of Chester, Pa., who made their excursion to the Cape, a short time since, was so captivated that he baa come for a longer

stay.

United Stale* Senator George Gisy, of Delaware, Is a guest of the Stockton. He arrived Saturdxy evening. Mr. Gray succeeded Mr. Bayard, when he was appointed by Mr. Cleveland Secretary of State. Rev. A. A. Murphy, son of Rev. Dr. ! Murphy, of tbe Old Log Cabin College, preached an eloquent sermon in Beadle Memorial Chapel at Cape May Point, from the parable of tbe prodigal son. Among his congregation were the President sod Mr*. Bussell Harrison. Dr. Scott and Postmaster-General Wanamaker. Rev. F. Le Roy Senour and wife, of New Alexandria, Pa ; Mrs. K. S. Rev. Bishop Scarborough, of New Jeraay, officiated lu St- John's Episcopal church yesterday morning. Among tbe oongregstiou were Mrs. President Harrison and her niece, Mrs. Dimmick. who afterward dined with General and Mrs. Sewell at their Windsor avenne cottage. Postmaster General Wanamaker entertained st dinner yesterday evening at 8 o'clock President sod Mrs. Harrison, Secretary Blaine. Rev. Dr. Scott. Rev. Dr. Murphy, ot Philadelphia, and Rt. Rev.
