There waa a narrow escape from drowning at Cape May Point yesterday A large raft bat been around iuat outside the surf near the Carlton bath bcusei, where the water at high tide la about six feet. It hat become a practice fur the bather* to awlm out and dire off, the swim from there to shallow water being comparatively easy. At IS o'clock yesterday the rail filled with bather*, mostly ladles, who had swam out, not noticing tlie change of tide, and when three or four of them dove off together and found the current taking them out, there was a universal cry for help. Most of the bathers had already left the water, but man and Mr. Hush immediately went to the assistance of those who were drifting out. Mr. Buckman had quite a time to land safely Mrs. Dimmlck with whom he bad been at the raft, sod in the meanwhile Mr. Bush had become very much exhausted in trying to bring in two of those who
bad drifted out
The life guard, having been quite seriously Injured on the raft, dould not go to hi* assistance, and Mr. Buckmau, though very much exhausted, Immediately entered the water again. Before be could aid the Imperilled party, bowever, they had reached shore In a very exhausted condition. President Harrison and Secretary Blaine, who were ou the beech, became greatly excited and proved themselves valuable by keeping off the crowd which pressed sround the rescued parly when they had reached shore.
