A gentleman in New York, Hie owner of one of the finest collections of butter- j flics iu .the country, lias made an experiment which proven conclusively that butterflies are endowed not only with 1 bright colors, but with marvelously ! acute senses. Out of his collection, tom- ] . prising almost every known variety, he j choso two butterflies which were only ; two or three days old. and had never lutd '

their freedom.

Ono of these he attached securely by a ( - tliread to the fence in the rear of his ! house in the upper part of New York. | Ho marked the other so thal he could j identify it, and placing it in a small Iwx ■

carried it do wn town to one of the ferries, across the river to Hoboken, and some distance into the city of Hoboken. Tlere it wss turned louse. When tho experimenter reached his house, hours Utter, he found the two butterflio side by side on liis luck fence. The butterfly which was but just born, and had never before had its liberty, had traveled several miltw, crossed a wide river and promptly foumVits way.back to its mate in one of those Itack yards of New York which are almost indistinguishable alike

in their ugliness.

This seemed a most extraordinary feat to one of a party of gentle]lien to whom the story was told by the experimenter, and be asked a well known naturalist whether it could be believed. The naturalist answered that tbc«ens6 of smell, which was undoubtedly iu this case the butterfly's guide, was in many animals so wonderfully acute that to him the case did not seeni remarkable, much loss unbelievable.—Youth's Companion. Nothing shows the growth of yachting in America more than the growth of the yacht agency. If a man wants to buy, sell or charter a yacht be goes to • yacht agency. In a large New York agency a list tan be found of every yacht for sale or for charter in the United States and England. Every detail .concerning them is also there on record. Besides this there is «list of the yachts which the projirictor of the agency lias on. hand for sale or charter. This is not all. Crews, sailing masters, and all sorts of appliances for yachts are furnished by the agency. From small beginning* tho'ynrht agencies have become large and well paying business en-terjiri»e».-,_New York Tribune.
