pe. ever altering manses, resembling that familiar animalcule of our kj1» we know as the amu-l-a. The embers of the sponge colony form the bulk of the population. They are im-bcddi-d in the ipntige snlsdancv; they wander about tbnmgh the m.-»h'-s of the ijimg.. t4wy K-ixe food ami flourish and grow; and they probably give origin to the "eggs" from which new ijimges are in due courts produced. More characteristic, however, are certain unit* ^ this living sponge colony which live in the lining membrane of the canals. In point ol fact, a sponge is a kind of Venice, a certain proportion of inhabitanta, like the famous qneen of 4he Adriatic herself, livesl ou the bank* of the waterways. Just a* in .re wc find provisions for the deniof the city brought to the inhahi- < by the canals, so from the water, which, as we shall se«, is perpetually circulating through a sponge, the mcmlflas age ouletiy rwx-ive their fftod. a sjiongv fragment Y'< a dozen large hides or »• ’IV-sc'iirs-rluri-^Nlc'ar in mind, we call uscula. Tiler ar dominion. But sponge allows that it is riddle<l with finer and smaller a|s-rtuiv*. Tins*the j sires, and they form the entrances to the s|Kingc domain. On the lank* of the canal you may stw grvwiug plentifully in summer time a gre-en sponge, which is the common fresh

dc*.

Now if you drop a living specimen of this specie* into* bowl of wab-r, andput powdered'indigo into the —- t lay note hoW the , um-nti petually being sweirt in hythe pores and it by the oscula. ITS XOCIUSliMEST. In living sponge this perpetual and unceasing circulation of water proceeds. This is the mlo evidence the unassist.-d sight receives of the vitality of the sponge colony, an.l the importaqce of this circulation in aiding life in three depths to he fairly carried out cannot readily he ovi-reBtimatod. Let us now see how this circulation is maintained. Microscopically regardi-d. we see here and there, in the sides of the sponge passages, little air chambers or reces*-s. which remind one of the lowing places in a narrow canal. Lining these chambers we see living sponge units of a tyja- different from the shaiieless specks' we noted to occur in the meshes of the sponge substance itself. The units of the recesaes each consist of a living particle, whose free extremity is raised into a kind of collar, from which project* a Lashlike filament known as a flagellum. This lash is in constant vement. It waves to and fro in the ter. and the collection of lashes wi in any one chamber acts as a veri table brush, which by its movement not only sweeps water in the port*, but sends it onward througli the sismge. and in ' ue time w-nds it out by the bigger holes r oscula. This constant circulation in Uie sponge discharges morn than one important function. For, as already noted, serves the iiurpoic of nutrition, in t the particle* on which sponge life is supported are swept into the colony. Again, the fresh currenu of wab-r carry with them the oxygen gas which ' of sporlfcc existence, as of while, thirdly, waste matters, inevitably alike in sponge and in man as the remit of living, are swept out of the colony and discharged into the sea beyond. Our bit of sjionge has thus grown from a r dry fregraent into a living reality, is a community in which already, low as it is. the work of life has come to be discharged by distinct and fairly specialized being*.—Londim Blustrated News.
