Endonmnit S^lftlw The above came U a parlieuUrlj Ellas ooe to be siren to a elaaa of mutual benefit order* which hare arlaen during the paat ten year*, oeaaful. They bear the to the endowment plan of the life ln>uranee eompanlea, which each order* a* the American Legion of Honor, Ancient Order of United Workmen, bear to the purely life loan ranee pl$ff»od the practicahlll'y of the plana preeeated la ju<t a< appireot In the one caae aa In the other. No one doubt* the ability of the order* named to fulfil their promiaea and there la equal reason for faith In the second claas ol order* which we have styled ‘•Endowment Societie*." A conaplcooua tzample of this kind of orders Is the Ancient Order ol Patriclana, a scaate of wlilch l a* been established In this city, with Haltering prospect* of rapid growth. The strongest features of the most flourishing fraternal orders are united In this. The plan, briefly staled, la that within al* year* an amount ranging from $500 to #5,000 will be paid to policy bolder* for a aerie* of assessment* which are expected to aggregate from *350 to #40# per thousand dollars. Tbla seem* to those who have not looked Into the matter, to be too much to attempt to do, but since similar contracts have been made and fulfilled by other companies and societies for many years, there Is no reason to doubt It* ability to do so. The old line companies have a plan by which they agree to pay an endowment of #1,000 at the end of ten years for a total of a little over #000 paid In, and In addition insures tbs life for (1,000, durtbe whole period. The life Insurance alone Is worth for the V 1 7“™ about (150, and when the very'vnuch greater expenses of the old line ctfopaute* are taken Into consideration. It will be read. Ily seen that the Ancient Order of Patricians offers to do no more wonderful thing than has been done for many years by these companies, which have grown to be enormously wealthy at the business. The endowment societies merely turn the proflu of the plan Into the pockets of the Individual members, instead of into those of a amalb number of officers and stockboldera. No belter argument can be produced to prove the efficiency of the plan than tbit one. It I* self-evident that, with good management, which la almost absolutely scoured by placing executive officers who control the fuuds under heavy bond*, that this society will be successful, and that this as well as the purely life Insurance orders. Is destined to prove Incalculably beneficial to-Cvery i munlty In which Its branshes^may be •ttsbllsbed. But to make lt\absolutely eertsln of fulfilling Its agrecnxnts. It must be understood that Its power of aswaamcnt is unlimited and la governed solely by the neoeeiitlee of the Without this power cxlg*ncl«* might easily dflie, whereby the Income would not be sufficient and the order, therefore,
unsafe.
The sick benefit feature la a valuable OJC In the Patrician*, but the amount* piid are not ao great as In other similar orders, only ten dollars per thousand being allowed. At present the assessments number only thirteen per year. Tue German American Title and Trust Company la the custodian of the funds, aid speaks highly of the officers of the Supreme Senate. In regard to these officer*, we have the following informs, tioo: Mr. Lorln Chambers, the Dlrec t >r-Q*neral, Is one of Philadelphia’, most active business men, and Is very much interested in hla work as connectel with this order. The Supreme Consul, or presiding officer, Mr. Charles McCilntock, Is well known in newapeper circles, having held a responsible jroslUon in the Philadelphia Prtu office for years. The Supreme P»st Consul, C. R. Koch, and the Supreme Vice-Consul, W. J. Koch, are prominent Philadelphia merohanta. The Supreme Treasurer, Charles T. Shields, holds a responsible position In the Philadelphia city treasurer’s office, which requires him to give a bond of (#0,000. The Supreme Medical Examiner, Dr. O. M. D. Pelt*, Is a prominent Philadelphia physician. The Supreme Recorder, W. H. Brooks, I* an S. expert book-keeper, who has held a po- ^ si lion with a prominent firm for years. These are the active officers upon whom tbs burden of conducting the affairs of the order devolves, and It receives careful attention at their band* Those who join this order will find an endowment of one thousand dollars or more obtained through this mediumahlp, within si* years—one-fourth within three years, and the balance at the close of i he term—a anally obtained. The loan feature by which a portion of the endowment maybe obtained by members of the order la good standing, who are able to give the required security Is aa especially useful feature. Willis 8. Miller, the assistant clerk In the office of Congress Hall, who will this week complete the second hla service at that famous hotel, will, this fall, enter Lafayette College, to begins full course. Mr. Miller Is . the T"~-- active amf studious of young men, having studied hard for several yearn. We hope he may succeed be a prominent man of the future.
