Cape May was a resort of prominence as early as 1803, but did not begin to grow until after the war of 1812. In 1830 it was a town of about forty houses. For years it has been the resort of some of the most distinguished dtizens of the country. Soon after the opening of the West Jersey Railroad in 1862 it became one of the foremost resorts in the country. It now claims the title of being the most fashionable seaside resort in America
CONVENIENCES.
The sewerage and drainage system of th«city is of the first order. The city is lighted by electric arc lights, and the beach boulevard and board walk are espedally provided with them. Means of Access.
Cape May is reached by the West Jersey Railroad from Camden, and is fed by the Great Pennsylvania system, which gives the Cape excellent train service. Four express trains arrive daily. The time tables and information can be had at any Pennsylvania Railroad office. The Steamer Republic also makes daily excursions from Philaddphia to Cape May.
FISHING AND BOATING.
Yachts commanded by able captains are always ready to convey guests to the quiet fishing grounds in the sounds, or upon delightful sailing excursions at moderate cost. Larger vessels hilly equipped can be chaffered for fishing or sailing trips in the open ocean. Cape Island sounds abound with edible and gamey fish.
SURF BATHING.
Nowhere in the world is there sea-bathing equal to that to be had here. The lieach slopes very gradually, is firm and free from gullies, coarse sand, gravel, &c. It can be enjoyed with absolute safety The centrepiece of this page illustrates the evenness of the beach. It is of a hard white sand, yet elastic to the step, and free from stones and adl hard substances.
Board-walk And Drives.
The Board-walk and Drive extend the whole length of the city, along the sea front, and afford an excellent- opportunity for enjoyable driving and walking.
