TUESDAY. AUGUST 1J, t8#l.
That is the question. the wlvrrtisemeuls uutil you »re familisr with the «l»y» sod the hour* for going o*cr. So*I)at trsreling, like much other business »nd work th«t Is done on Sunday, seems to be hard to regulate that nilschlef may be aeoided. It is believed by many good people that Sabbath desecrators, who are desecrator* of choice, who care nothing for the Chris, tian Sabbath at all, are catered to to an extent that la unnecesaary and unwise. It will not do to aay that the public demand excursion trams, for instance, If those excursion trains from giving decent, orderly people an outing who can In no other way secure proper and needful recreation, merely carry people out of town to become drunken and disorderly, are a necessity or a blessing. There are trains that carry excursionists from the cities to certain seaside resorts' on the Sabbath, that for the good of those who patronize them, If for no other reason, should by abandoned. Their running not only does injury in this way, but they impose hardships on trainmen that are very trying to endure. Certain Sunday trains to certain resort* not very far away, seem to do nothing but carry men down to the shore to drink rum, blaspheme and fight, and defy the con* due tors who attempt to preserve order and collect fare* and ticket*. Conductor* have a fearful dread of a work of tliat character, and it Is a pity that such a business should be encouraged. Wives and children must feel disgraced and disheartened at the resnlt of their outing With their drunken lord*. Speaking editorially upon very much the same subject, though referring to another route of travel, the Philadelphia Timet says: ‘‘The way to atop such disgraceful conduct is to stop It, and to stop It in such manner as will assure the public against 1U repetition. No visibly drunken man, white or black, should ever he permitted to enter a passenger car on any railway ; and if admonition to those who get into car* fails to enforce decent behavior, the presence of* few able-bodied policemen with aptness in the use of their clubs, would be eminently useful for an sional trip. A single conductor and hi* one or two assistants are utterly powerless to awe a gang of drunken rowdies, and a few lessons from ununiformed but well-heeled policemen would produce roost wholesome result*." Tut letter published In the Sunday Philadelphia Tima, ami purporting to have been sent Captain Nelllna, of the Riverton team, by some person here, sliould have been published o’ author's signature, instead of a It contains many statements which cannot be substantiated, and which have no basis of fact upon which to rest, and it Is simply cowardly iu iu> writer to permit such assertions published on his authority, without as publicly avowing his responsibility. It 1* surprising that the Timet ahould allow iu column* to lie used in such a manner. We strongly suspect who is the writer, and if we are correct in surmise*, he i* so strongly biassed for Riverton, that his opinion, if he desired to be fair, could scarcely be taken so, though hi* letter effectually dispose* of any Idea which may have existed that he wanted to discuss the matter in a just manner. Aside from the Riverton team, we will venture to say that there is not a team which has ever played here, the member* of which will deny that the accusation* he makes true. He writes, for instance that has been apparent to many that they usually select some one as umpire who, while he may have entertained the very best of intentions, from his close connection with their own club, tirely unfitted to act in such capacity and to give unbiased opinions." As matter of fact It is usually difficult find an umpire, and the beat man present who will act l2 taken. Congressman Rcybum, on one occasiom, employed a professional umpire to come here, and he was comjilaincd of more than any other, though he is now regularly employed to umpire for profc*. sional teams, and is giving satisfaction. McFetridge was granted Riverton In the contest of August 3d, though be was the man, naturally,, most desirous of the team’s success. He also makes the following astounding assertions “ 1 have seen outrageous coaching, mei all over the field when their place wa on the bench; runner* obstructed a the bases, particularly at third, and many tricks employed, all of which were foreign to the game and distasteful to disinterested spectator*." Is there a man who ha* attended the games during the Mason who ever saw Cape May player* guilty of such conduct* On the other hand, ha* not Cape May team borne without several team* just such tricks as are here mentioned ? The sentiment which prevails here is that clearly doubtful, points should be deckled iu favor of the visitors lor courtesy'* sake, and we believe umpire*, almost without exception, have done so. Cape May baa proven to be an exceptionable team and has aroused jealousies which find ex-< pre**lon in such preposterous charges
as those quoted.

Rivektok'* manager Taylor, who published an article in Sunday's Prett, claiming that the Riverton was right the recent base hall dispute, waa very completely answered by Dureil in yesterday’* /Vest. Taylor claimed that Cake, the man who made the hit which caused the dispute, scored, and thus “tied the score.” This far-fetched mls-atatemrut indicate* how hard they find it to get up excuse* for their co duct. Time waa called when the hit question waa made, and Cake could not by any imssiblr means have gone beyond first base, for the game went no further. Taylor also speaks of ‘‘compromising " by returning Cake to first base. This la a typical Riverton "compromise," for it gave to Riverton all they claimed, and of course could not be considered.

I was upon tbe low tawny island beach, where tbe cold waves dashed high and threw their spray Into the sun's face, and I saw the stark grayblack body of a gull- The relentless sea bad crumpled tbe soft feathers, and its beak and legs were covered by the drifting sand.
