It la true that finer aurf bathing haa not been enjoyed at Cape May for many a year—the temperature of the water being coneUntly delightful, while the air la alao ateadily romfortable dripping bathen aa they come forth front the aurf. Blue llpa and chattering teeth are unknown, and the moat aallafar lory aurf bath poaalble la had from day to day by many hundred* of people. What am known a* the Stockton and Congreaa Ball bathing grounda are with moat unuaual liberality patronized. Or* reader* are doubtlea* impreaaed with the fact that a greater numbei relebritiea have patronized Cape May thl* aummer than for many yearn, and thi* atatmnent mean* a good deal that 1* Important in the progrra* of a anmmer rraort aeaaon. The Stab ha* kept the public poated fully of event* transpiring, and these events tall largely of the presence of many prominent and distinguished ladies and gentlemen. And more, it will be noticed that many of these personage* seek entertainmi at Congreaa Ball, a name that has come down from the early hotel days of Cape May a* the atopping-place of the great personage* of the country. No other retort can boast of r*rciring blue blood, so many from among the true aristocracy of the land, aa Cape May. And the expression* of pleaaui heard from all are genuine and earne*' SURF NOTES. Mias Alice Marshall appears quite, bewitching aa she enter* the snrf In a neat black bathing suit. Madame Jtodjeaka was lu the aurf yesterday, and was pronounced the most imposing and beautiful woman who bathed. Mia* Bell* Hemingway, of Mt. Airy, Pa., and her friend, Mia* Macintosh, had a great bath yesterday, hot why were they all alone In their lovelii M las Aril* Howe had an elegant bath yesterday among the great billows that came tumbling In with unntual volume and force. A stalwart eaoort took safe care of her. Mlaaca Sue Hildreth and Mabel VanGllderwere a long time out lu deep water and loatb to leave at tbe last. Ned Wharton thinks Mia* Ma'bel a daisy

A Fire.
The old Jndith Hand homestead at Hlo Grande, Oil* county, waa destroyed by fire on Friday night. The building* were nearly sixty years old and included a store building In which e general store has been kept ever since It waa built. It used to be the depot of supply for the country for five mile* in any direction, and has been known to almost everybody residing lu lower Cape May county for many yean. In olden times when whiskey was thought to be a necessary part of the family stores, many a farmer trudged over the fallow fields to get his gallon of whiskey and his pint of molasses, and many a fisherman found It necessary to fortify himSelf against damp, beat, cold, dryness, etc., during his work or play In the sounds, by haring hi* demijohn attended to at this store. Of course that sort thing la done away with. It la unfashionable, made *o by a variety of circumstance*; and now the farmer or the fiat ermau who drinks the stuff or la sui peeled of doing so. Is at ouce voted "bad mall," and almost ostracised, socially. TTilrty or forty year* ago, however, the ataunrlieat, moat rellalde and most reaperli d men did things attracted little i.otloc then, but would hurt a man in the estimation of the community very much now. Abont the fire there la another odd thing, and that la that Champion, the shoemaker, who occupied a portion of the house at the time of the fire, has lived In six places at Rio Grande, which have been destroyed by fire In the last few years. It la a curious coincidence. It la also mid that Hlo Grande has averaged, for several years, three font fire* per year, while a fire In any other part of our county la a rare resoe. A shrewd detective migi cover that there was something than mere accident to account for them. It la said that the More baa recently been a rendezvous at which card-playing was indulged in, and soft drinks, least, sold. May not something in hard drinks have figared In the entertain.

Tbia was afterwatd Interpreted by those who it thought, that she meant that in accordance with some previous arrangeIb these men, tbe woman bad way disposed of the man, by hidden dagger or ot lie revise, and bis body had gone out with the current Such waa the curious story. Yesterday we sent over a rej-orter to ascertain bow much truth there might be iu it, and found that a man waa really missing, and that his clothe* remained, in the pockets of which was a card bearing of W. W. Burdell, 908 S. 7lh street, PhlladelgUp, and a receipted physician* bill f^n Dr.,Brill, of 332 S. 5th at reel,—nothing more, aod yet they say he was called " Jeaae." Partite landing did not seem to know anything about tbe story of tbe ladies -overhearing the remark first given, but that tbe woman who went In with the man did not show herself until the ItepnUlc was randy to leave. The missing man not turning up, telegrams were sent to I'blladnlpiil* yesterday morning to the addresses found In his pocketa, but later yesterday afternoon no replies had been received by those who were thus trying to solve tbe mystery It la a moat remarkable osar, even divested of all.the sensational rumors quoted, and as those who probably do kuow something are tbcmseli known, the myatery Is likely to remain
unsolved.
