A gentleman in New York, the owner of one of the finest collections of butterflies in the country, has made an experiment which proves conclusively that ; butterflies are endowed not only with : bright color*, hot with marvelously ! acute senses. Out of hiscoUcction, com- : prising almost every known variety, he chose two butterflies which were only two or three day* old, and had never had l

their freedom.

One of these he attached securely by a thread to the fence in the rear of hi* house in the upper part of New York. : Do marked the other no that he could j identify it, and placing it in a small box carried it down town to one of the ferric*, across the river to Hoboken, and some distance into the city of Hoboken. Here it waa tamed louse. When the experimenter reached his house, several hour* later, he found the two butteribd side by ride on hia hack fence. The butterfly which was hut just bom. and had J never before had its liberty, had traveled j several miles, crumed a wide river and promptly found its war back to its mate J in one of those buck yards of New York : which are almost indistingnishably alike 1

in their ugliness.

This seemed a m««t extraordinary feat j to one of a party of gentlemen to whom the story was told by the experimenter, and he naked a well known naturalist. whether it could be believed. The naturalist answered that tbeorase of smell. hich was Undoubtedly in this case the butterfly's guide, was in many animals . onderfnlly acute that to him the did not seem remarkable, much less nnhebcrablr.—Youth's Comimnion. Croalb of Yacht Ageuvirs. Nothing shows the growth of yachtig in America more than tlie growth of the yacht agency. If a man wants to buy. sell or charter a yacht be goes to » yacht agency. In a large New York agency a list can be foend of every yacht for sale or for charter in the tail sconceming them is also there on record. Besides this there is a list of the yachts which the pro|irietor of the agency has on hand for sale or charter. This is not nil. Crews, sailing masters, and all sorts of appliances for yacht* are furnished by the agency. From small U-ginuiugs the yacht agencies have become large and well paying hmincss enterprise*.—New York Tribune.

Prince Bismarck'* fondness for heather ia not a new fancy. With him the hoatber ore truly than the primrose waa to Lord Beaeonsficld, “hu favorite flower." Nearly thirty year* ago. when minister to Paris, be made a trip to the sooth of France, visiting among other places Cham bard. Writing to his wife from Bordeaux, under date July 27, 1663. Bismarck says -From inclosed specimen* of heather yon will no longer be able to soo how purple this plant I am so fond of blooms there—the only flower in the royal garden, and swallows Almost the only living creature* in the castle. For sparrows it is too lonely.'"—London New*.
