The fire alarm again. Monday evening bids were opened by the Fire commiaaioners, of Camden, for the fntroduc thin of a more improved alarm service, and the contract was awarded the Gamewell Fire Alarm Company to furnish theri system to that city for ll,7G0. The contract includes the putting In of six circuit repeaters, forty miles of wire and ten new fire alarm boxes. Cape May'a eonncil, only two montlis ago, refused to advertise for bids, but gave to this company on a bid given to ouf'city two years ago, the contract for putting in five boxes, one Indicator (probably repeater, Camden calls It), and the n eaaary wire, which probably will no't

oeed fire miles in all, for the sum j»LL“"“ uu ♦1,800 or ♦1,840. The diy in addition "i*'

bought the poles, for which it paid over ♦123,and probably paid for the put-

ting up of the poles.

The advocates of the fire alarm, who began two yean ago, did not give up until they succeeded iu getting the system Introduced. Why is it that Camih-n eau get ten boxes, aix circuit repeaters and forty miles of wire for ♦1,700, and Cape May for ♦1,830, cannot get but fire boxes, one Indicator and fire miles,

of wire ?

The number of fine turnouts at Cape May may be counted on the ends of one's fingers probably without repetiton. It may as well be admitted, first aa last, that there has been a great loaa to Cape May life and Interest in this respect. For years the Stab has urged Improvement in our drives, their extension aud betterment, aud some Rule advancement seemed to be made. It was not until laat yrsr, however, that the long. Ulkcd-of filling in of the breach of 1100 feet between the city and Mount Vernon was accomplished, and then only by private effort of cottage families, who for the sake of the public good and public progress, as well aa their Individual convenience and pleasure, bore the pence of making the connection; thus with similar effort at the Cape May aide a continuous drive was had along the beach; but it was destined to be abortlived. Early the past spring the storm tides partially broke away this connection, but probably three hundred dollars would have repaired the breach. It was not done, and now the trolley road has taken .possession of It, re palling It auffioienUy to enable them to Uy their ordinarly tidee; but this shuts out Damage driving In that direction except by the old method of plunging d Into the soft beach sand as of old. and of crawling up again at the Mount Vernon intersection. Really, In this matter things got ao better fast. It may be just aa well that the trolley road utilised this piece of road, for It is doubtful if either Individuals or authoritlei would have rebuilt It and have saved il to the use of carriage driving.
