THUBSDAY. JULY H. lb»2. OeDvrsl Sewell wm, on Thursday, elected a director of the Chicago Junction iteilway and Union Mock Yards
Company.
It is said that Lieutenant Bally can call upon the aberilT to aid him in compelling the attendance of members of Co. U at Camp, if it becomes mcessary. The boys begin to realise that being soldiers is bigb old fan soinetimesj The nest ball game will be played on Saturday afternoon next, between Cape May and A. C. S. N., and a sharp conteat may be expected. All ladles and gentlemen who like good hall playing should be prepared to attend. Whenerer you teel that things are doll at Ca]« May, bear in mind the fact that all the other Jersey coast resorts feel the same way and business people complain just as much. Resorts always bare these things in commux A strange feature about life, at Cape May is the apatbey with which new* the misdemeanors of local officials is received by many really good people. It is tune they bad awakened to the dangers which menace the prosperity of the resort because of corrupt gov-
ernment.
The use of tobacco has always been looked ujion as a unbealthful practise, but ainee the theory has been advanced that much disease is caused by parasites, there have been many recruits to the army of tobacco users from among those who believe it to be a preventive to diseases by causing the destruction of
microbes.
We And no fault with the volunteer firemen; on the contrary we have confidence In tbeir ability and willingness to serve skilfully in case of fire, but we criticise the fire alarm system, both as to its quality and price, and will see that the discussion is not diverted from the real topic by any Juvt-raialng process which may be invented. Simon llaaalcr is guarded by good an gels probably attracted to biro by the sweet lianuoules with which be la constantly causing the air to vibrate. For three days we have been trying to tell of bis fishing experiences at the pier and have jnst succeeded in doing It. Souuthlng baa happened each time before to interfere with our designs. He visited the lower deck with bis fishing line ready for business, and all the occupants fled, knowing that his advent would settle the fishing for the day. Bure enough the fish left excepting the sea spider and little bass, which he caught after an hour's struggle, and now In bis chagrin ho says this lower deck is fit only for cooing lovers on
dark nights.
I'crhaps one of the moot Interesting and gratifying features of entertain, ment given to Cape May In recent years Is that to be found at the Athletic Fark grounds. Our readers can well remember with what degree of satisfaction and pleasure was hailed the first announcement that such men as lion. John E. Keyburn, George W. Boyd, Max Hiebenack and other prominent gentlemen bad taken bold of the plan of organization and establiahed a suitable and inviting park, where almost daily during the two months of July and August athletic sports should be bad for the entertainment and interest of the Cape May summer, as well as nstive population. A splendid base ball team was organized at the first, composed of members of college nines, mostly Princeton students, and with some change*, continues such to-day. The Cape May's have played against well known strong teams, and not very often vanquished. While dull care baa been thrown to the winds these past five summer* while the excitement and Interest In the sports have held sway, twice, at least, we have had to pause In mourning. Poor Fred lirokaw, who was booked for the Cape May s last year, died while heroically striving to save the lives of others. And then our own Ourell, who at tbe close of last bos eon went to Europe to pursue his studies, fell by tbe wayside and lies buried in a foreign land. These things made us all feel very sad, and to many every visit to the games recalls the form of W. E. Du roll, not only admired for his skill In sports, but also for his gentlemanly traits and scholarly attainments. Tbe days go by and the seasons roll round, however, and recreation and pastime are sought as- eagerly as ever. We want to Interject right here the statement that the park folks have not had an altogether easy puU of It, finanelally, for the expenses, naturally enough, have been very heavy from tba first. It would ha a shame to even think of abandoning these sports and of I seating the park bees use of a want of suffi-
cut down expenses as much as is wisely possible, and In this they certainly have the hearty good wishes and favor of all. Better aid soeh an enterprise by Individsal contributions than see it fail. Mr. fleyburn himself has In every possible way stood with a broad shoulder tbe good eases, and our desire it that

Base Ball.

One of the most interesting ball games which has ever occurred here was that of yesterday. Tin- visiting team is composed of excellent material and played a strong game. Until tbe eight inning tbe result was in doubt, for tbe first six innings tieilher side scored and the interest taken in the game by a goodly uumlier of spectators was intense, tbe seventh Cape May broke the elu In the sixth there war a very fair chance for run getting by Cape May but one of those phenomena! plays which always come w hen unexpected, cut off the opportunity. Bayne obtained first by being bit by ball. King advanced 1dm to second by clean bit across second into centre: Petiikin bclp-d both runners a I-oint forward by a sending ball to snuond and reached first himself because first baseman Holland failed to lydd the ball. The bases were filled and Great Batter Sullivan stepped to tbe plate with grim determination to help in some runs. He hit the ball hard Intending that it should go over third into left field but Tbini Baseman MeGarrigh- reached out bis good right band, caught the ball, found Bayne off third and put him out retiring the team, and covering himself with glory.
