Reid.

Tboae far famed Cain; May ball toMera, King and Humphries, arc determined to keep in condition so that they can capture ball* going anywhere between earth aud heaven, and to this end occasionally.rliir early, very early, five o'clock in the morning aud proceed to the park ,and play tennis. By six they are ready for an invigorating cup of coffee, which they find on preity Ocean avenue. After this they return to the hotel for a substantial breakfast We did not mention that fair ladies help them In their laudable training in early morn at the park, and In tb< in Invigorating axils over the limpid water* of the sounds. Tie ladies like base ball and the players. One-of the most progressive branches of the secret socle lies, in this city is Ogallalla Tribe, No. 157, Improved Order Red Men. Ita membership includes many of the best ol xens-aud the friendship and fraternity existing among them is evident to observers. The tribe exerts, therefore, a strong influence for good here, their meeting Monday evening the tendance was quite large, despite season and the warmth. Among the visitors were Dr. Walter Rodgers, ol the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, who made a very interesting and pleasant address. The adjournment occurred early to Watts Edmunds' Ice cream saloon, where all partook of refreshment at the expense of the chip fund. After this interest log event' Dr. Rodgers again addressed the tribe very fittingly in a speech presenting a beantlful emblem to R. J. Creswell, tiring prophet, as a token of esteem from the tribe. This gave rise pleasant remarks after which the party

disiwrsed.

The pleasant celebration of the birthday of Simon Haaaler Monday evening shows in what affectionate esteem the great leader is held here. For years and year* the music of the superb traa which have been here under his direction have delighted multitude* of visItors to this resort. He is an established factor In the summer life of Cape May, and his failure to arrive hern each summer would cause genuine sadness to prevail among the many who have been uplifted by hi* music. Aud the music which ea|>tivates and brings forth the heartiest applause is the finest, such as would please those- of the most cultivated taste, composition* of the masters, and • this Is one of the convincing evidences that the majority of Cape May's patrons arc fiom among the moat cultivated classes, who seek pleasures in the refinements ol life and are not partial to those tainted with vulgarity or unflnished. The beauties of nature as found at Cape May are fittingly accompanied by the beauties ol art and by men and women who are refined and cultivated to a thorough appreciation of both. The New York Prtu contains the following pointed com Private lams mailer: "The torturing of Private lama of the Tenth regiment of the Pennsylvania National Guard is an outrage probably unparalleled in this country In peace. It equal* many of the worst Instance* of cruelty in the German army, which bare led to the degradation and punishment of the officers responsible for the cruel ilies. We are pleased to see that high military authority in New York Is outspoken in condemning the inhuman and arbitrary deed. Brigadier General Emmons Clark, the farmer commander of the Seventh regiment,- is reported as saying that the action of the officer who inflicted the punishment has no precedent in this Mate and that the punishment was carried the extreme. General Clark added: •A* there was no martial law proclaimed In Homestead, I don't see bow lama could have been punished without a military trial, much leas put through the experience of being strung up by the thumbs. If Private !am* has any friend* I Imagine they will not hesitate long in bringing a civil suit aga lost Col Stroator
