The labor of editing a morning paper even at theseaaide, dur<ng such a bested term as exists at present, Is ••hot enough for you,” nevertheless, wc cannot refrain from penniog a few lines upon this very subject—thc beat. The •fls-IPbot-enough for-you-fiend" has been getting lu his work steadily for the last day or two, and no one feels like making the effort to either evade or to strike him down in his tracks. One can do nought but sullenly and crustily answer and paaa on. But, we at Cape May are so greatly bleated, escaping as we do the oppressive beat of the inland titles and towns, that one should scarcely thick of such a thing at declaring that It ia hot. Ont npon thc strand, even at midday, it has been delightfully pleasant and ccoling drafts of air have been floating about the hotels sod cottages that have led thoughtful people to ex press deep gratitude for tbeir favored condition as reports of the alarming high jump of the mercury yesterday came in from various sections of the country. Just thick of the heat in Phil. Sdclphls reaching 104 and 105, as it did yesterday, and no prospect of Its creeping down very rapidly for some days to come. The hot wave is reaching far and wide and in many sections the figures are higher than those quoted. At Loulal vllle, Ky, the mercury ran to 110. W e can scarcely underatand, as we get along In comparative comfort at 80, how humanity can exist elsewhere at 100 and 110. Are we as thankful as wc should be for the comforts we enjoy be re u Cape May? Would that all'mankind could come and taste the beauties here to be found and escape the trying conditions under which they are placed In many section, of this country Uwlay. What a blessing Is the open sea, even •« those only who dwell by !ta side. It feared the mortality list will be swelled to alarming proportions if the atmoepbertc conditions ooutlnie.
