TUESDAY. AUGUST 6, 1&32. Bar. Jot.ii Kcn-haw's Bible L-ctui will be given in tbe I’rcsbywriun cbnrcii this evening. The lectures i us oil interest snd both the chsrscter of the lecture snd the cause to which the proceeds will lie appropriated should command the presence of a large dienec. Let our readers remember this and go around to tbe church, be benefitted and benefit others. It is a sort of mutual benefit society, you sue,and then it la well enough to turn occasionally away from worldly pleasures

upon things spiritual.

There are Indicatlcns that the ph tiffs to tbe suit of a receiver to the I Hall arc repenting for their action, i It is not at all improbable that tbe c will never come to a trial. The earnest protestations of Somerby and the members of tbe board that everything is all right and that tbe fart will be demonstrated in the court has frightened tbe plaintiffs, who are deeply impressed by tbe evidence of coutidenca that Somerby has received from members of the order. Cajie May Branch has nearly one more year to run, and the members do care to be left at this close period. A lady who “dropped In''last c to congratulate tbe Daily Stau i upon the brightness and completem-ss of the paper, said: “I hope Mr. C. Garvin Uilmalne will hare a big testimonial. He deserves H. He makes Congress Ilall hops very pleasant for all who attend them.” Tbe Btak seconds this hope very heartily. Gilmalne is a thoroughly good fellow and worthy of all that can be bestowed upon him. Tbe attractions are to be numerous including the famine Ladles' Schubert Concert Co., of which tbe following things were asid In Kansas City and Major Rosa Gudin, collector of customs, said last night, '‘Nothing better In a musical way has ever been beard in this city.”—Kansas City Tones, Mo. Probably a better satisfied audience never assembled in Association Hall than the thousand people who were present last night to hear the charming entertainment given by tbe Ladles' Schubert Quartette, from Boston. The first number on tbe program, a nade by the Quartette, was a marvel of harmony and delicacy of expression, and throughout tbe evening the same high standard was maintained. Every number on the programme receivtd unstinted approbation.—Toronto Empirt. The menhaden fishermen during tbe months of July and August, operate atcamera along the beaches. Tbe 1 Stipulates that these steamersmustkeep two miles from shore, but their systematic disregard for this ruling is

ply outrageous.

Time aud again these steamers come so close to the shore that figures can bo seen on deck, and Uicy have nearly rained fishing here and at other points by

STRAND AND SURE.

“sbeepsbead," once so easily caught the Cape, Is now very scarce, and I steamers seem to have rained tbe fishing for>otber varieties completely. This, of course, has damaged the attractive power of several minor resorts aud w< want to know what is tbe utility of ■ law which is never enforced. This la the strangest part of It. Apparently, the officials whose duty it is to learn of the violations of law by the fiabermen have no sources of informaUtfir>D<Viio espionage mduts. Practically the law seems to be a dead letter, but so bold have th. come that residents all along the aboie will undoubtedly be driven to an appeal to the constituted authorities, in order to save the local fisheries from depletion. Of one thing tbe St.\K has reason be proud—Its aucoesaful efforts to hi pavilions erected along tbe city front upon tbe strand just outside the board walk. It required long and pg(K*lent effort to bring the authorities to the point of Introducing these rooveuicnce«, but tbe Stab uses much deliberation before taking hold of public questions and then persists in what we k now Is for tbe public good. The pavilions came early last season, and quickly became an object of liberal patronage. Early in the day may be seen scores of persons seeklngjnvlgorating benefits of the early morning air, cool, pure and wholesome, eta the high noonday shall shoot down its burning rays, even at noonday, while in exp places, and abut off from the air, folks "'are saying “It Is hot,"frequenters of the pavilions are restfully, comfortably enjoying a draft of air that makes one forget there Is each a thing as a noonday sun. And then they are such s strong vantage grohnd from which to alt in qnlet ixotecliod while viewing the great crowds of bathers. Someth too modest to be caught na “nasty'' bathing suit, ait In them to scan the pretty girls as they pass down, looking dry and sweet, girls come out of the water an boar later la a wet, unhandsome condition; and they.actaally find a pleasure la tbe position. Hovel readers repair thither for a forenoon's quiet while they devour something that Is worse than m trash, snd In the evening spoony plea, who do not particularly carr, (because trying to be good while In lore,: for those who resort to the pari lion* for the aumc purpose, and ait and look into each other's eyes, lore-lit by the electric

lamp.

George A. Frederick a well known architect <if Ba'tlmore, accompanied by bis wife and accomplished daughter, are Windsor guests. Russell B. Harrison and wife came over fifcm the Presidential cottage last evening and participated in the parlor bop at Congress Hall. Prof. Xcwis, who was principal of Capo May City schools in 18d7, will occupy the fame position during the ensuing school year. E. A. Turner and wife, of Baltimore, and their daughters. Misses Grace, Louise, Gertrude and Fannie, have cool Windsor rooms for a long sojourn. Mr. Darwin Musick, of the Grceusburg. Pi(., Iheord. has his family very pleasantly located at tbe Williamson Cottage during the heated term. Mr. Eugene .I. Quinn, of tbe United Fire Insurance Company, and James J. 4juinn. Eaq., both of New York, arc among recent arrivals at tbe Lafayette. Mias Uuldab Wool son, of West Cijie May, will teach st Court House during tbe next school year. She is an exceedingly bright and accomplished young

lady.

Master Samuel Doak, son of Councilman Doak, is visiting bit uncle In New York. He went through iu tbe Pul’man car and was met at Jersey City, by bis uncle. Miss Fanny M. Jackson a very pretty Mias of sweet'sixteen, whose parents arc happy in a Mt. Vernon cottage, s a daily bather .u^pn the city strand. Her constant cotnjianion. Miss Yu-Ian McConathy, also a very prepossessing Ml Vernon young lady, ia equully devoted to the pleasures of tbe surf. Lawyer James Alaton Cabell (accent on the find syllable) from Hichmond, Ya.,is in love with grand old Cape May after spending several weeks delight folly as a guest at Brextou Villa, and means to be found seeking a vacation upon our shore lu seasons to come. Mr. Cabell baa made maoy friends since, coming here. Mrs. Wilson Lewis, 1488 North Thirteenth street, Philadelphia, well known to many of both our daily and weekly readers, was awarded the first prize for being tbe handsomest elderly lady in attendance upon a grand free excursion to Lxnsdowue the other day. Miss Ella J. Uitzelberger, 13SG Ridge ave nuc. was awarded tbe price for the prettiest yonog lady. Mrs. Lewis ia a daughter of the late Mackey Williams, of Dennisvllle, and ever since reaching womanhood baa been counted a very handsome woman. There' are lorn of pretty girls and handsome matrons spending tbe summer very pleasantly on Ml Vernon. Almost every day many of them may be seen mingling with Cape May City maids and matruua in tbe breakers or Dripping with them over tbe floor in the g»y season hop* of evenings. Here are a few of those worthy of mention: M tssea Belle Concannon, Cclie Concannon, Anna Llngg. Judith Miller, Katie Mlllor, Maggie Miller, Clara Uaipio, Kittle Montague. Nan Montague, Fitblan McConathey. Mo. John T, Sandman, Mrs. F. C. C. Liugg, Mrs. McConati.ey, Airs. Stewart, Mrs. Wagenlteiser. tnnie B. C. Webster, pianist for Madsm Louis' dancing class, ia of Richmond's best families and a relative of America's great statesman. Daniel Webster, who was a first cousin to her father. Miss Webster has id her posilver ring that came into her family from Daniel Webster, that is one-hundred years bid, set with diamonds. It is a very quaint article of jewelry and very valuable. In her family ia also tbe oldest Masonic apron in the United Slates, also Masonic jcwelry. In due time those will be presented to Dove Lodge, of Richmond, very old lodge, of which bet father was a member. Mias Webster's mother was a Miss Doggelt, aud her grandmother was Miss Wade, slater to General W’ade, famous in tbe wsr ef 1812. He was iu love with and courted tbe young lady whom General Winfield Soott afterward married. Some triv'al matter cauaed them to break ihelr engagement. It Is said that though General Soott was very kind to her and loved her dearly, she died of a broken heart, grieving for her first love. The Wadea descended from Lord Churchill's family, of England. Churchill Daggett lelt to Mias Webster and her twin fine property in Rlcbraend, and among other personal t (Tecta a Steinway piano, set iu ebony, Inlaid wilb pearl aud gold, that cost t20u0. Both sisters were educated in music by a Prof. GcrdhardL from I-eipsic, at tbe Riebmoud Conaervatery of Music, and completed their studies in Boston. Miss Webster Is passing the summer lo this easy, comfortable way, preferring not to be idle «nd enjoy tbe season at glorious old Cape May.
