In yesterday's Gaily Staii there was a paragraph which stated that Jerry Harris, colored, of Court House, was stabbed Sunday, August Tlh, here and bad died from the effects of his injuries on Wednesday. A letter from him yesterday Informed us that he was still in the land of the living and hoped to remain for some time yet. We, therefore, hasten to inform the public of the fact. The news came to us from sp- . patently authentic source*. Harris says be knows who was his assailant and will prosecute him. The name of Edward 5. Hall was yesterday connected with the Iron Hall in a short discussion of its affairs in the Daily Star, but It was an error, Mr. 11*11 has no connection with the Iron Hall, whatever, but ably fills the responsible position of Secretary and Treasurer of the New Jersey Trust sod Safe Deposit Co., a branch of 'which does business In this city. The man to whom we Intended to refer was J. Henry Hsyes, now one of 'the Supreme trus- ' tees of the Iron Hall and coupccted as cashier with the Mutual Bank Surety Safe Deposits and Trust Co , into which a large slice of tbe Iron Hall s Trust fumbi were thrown, and which recently closed its doors and is now In the bands of a rccelycr. J. Henry Hayes was at one time assistant secretary and triasurir of the New Jersey Trust and SafeDeposit Co., which position he vacated about two years ago, and became interested in the Iron Hall. He was known here, and was probably tbe only supreme officer of whom anybody here knew anything, hence our intended ref-
erence to him.
Wc started yesterday to give the drift ol the state of affairs concerning Iron Hall as they appear from day to day in tbo daily papers, but rather abruptly, because what we meant to follow did not get In hand, “They say" this, and “they say'' that. It w observed, and we meant to go on i that just why those investigating claim tbe need of a receiver, or why they Imagine tbe bank in which Mr. Someiby, Mr. Hayes and others are Interested cannot m ike a proper, showing of tbe funds of the order, not be understood until the affairs are. lully looked into. It docs seem, sa said, that In no scheme where gatp looked for can men rafely get through with their plans, land those in authority and responsibility find a more responsible, more difficult task than Imagined. Tbe supreme officers may have done tbe best they could and we trust a receiver .may not need to Ife pointed, after all. If such an ind tigable worker as Mr. Bomerby, and such excellent bankers as are associated with him cannot bold up the t then who could have done better. As we said^M v aeems wc cannot tie to . with any certainty of success. If the papers turn against them why blame them 90 mnch after all, if they have realiy-doiie the best they could.
