A fact which frequently escape* attention of obaervera as well a many men wbo are members of the military organisation*,1*, that nearly or quite all formations, ceremonials and drllla are useful and have particular ends In view, of a practical nature. Beginning with tbe ■•reveille,’’ or awakening call, in early morning, and ending with “taps," each movemei e isential. Tbe awakening call not only answers tbe purpose of rousing tbe mm. but Includes tbe ceremony of a roll-call immediately after, by which each mao lo an organization is known to be present or absent as the case may be and the exact status of tbe force is discovered. Tbe absentees are. course, Inveatlgs’ed and the cause their absence becomes known and corded. Tbe next call is that for guard moant, which is an interesting and pretty ceremony Into which music enters, and which includes soma marching movements. The utility of it Ilea In the fact that tbe condition of the men and accoutrements are thoroughly and Impressively examined lot and their fitness for doty made knowi One of the intended results la to create a spirit of emulation In tbe cultivation of soldierly quallt'iea and care of accoutrements. Tbe music and ceremony are in this as in most other military formations, exbllaranU, intoxicants, s.imulanta, which arouse tbe pride of partlcipsDta. In encampments, tbe guard mount Is sometimes followed by a parade of all the troops, which is called the “troop parade" and 1* design'd to do lor tbe whole command what the “guard mount" does for guard details, that la, subject then a rigid Inspection and stimulate their military ardor. It la preceded by a roll-call, which again “locates" officer and private. After the ceremony another pretly thing is sometimes t the arms of the whole command are stacked In front of tbe camp, the colors lain across the centre, and a sentinel appointed to watch over It and t< that every body who crosses the color line thus made, salutes the color. This, of course. Is designed to teach respect for the colors, and to impressively direct attention to them, as the symbol of home and country. The evening parade or “retreat" la preceded by i roll call for tbe purpose of "locating' each man once more, of discovering - again as ts bis fitness for duty. Tbe ceremony includes plenty of music and Is rather enjoyable even to participants. The last roll-call occurs a half-hour Wore "taps'’ or tbe signal for lights jfit and I* called “tattoo,” and doses the day just as “reveille,” or awakening in tbe morning opens It. will be seen that tbe mililanr plan is essentially practical as well a* pretty, and likely to produce tbe Mnost exact results in keeping a body of men In proper shape, and of knowing where each one may be found at any hour and hla exact oondllioc as to health and equipment.
