cape May daily star PUBLISHKD EVERT MORNING,
MONDAY, JULY 6. 1897. Five tnmpa were unoirtbed yeatcrd»J by the police end given their marching order* by Mayor Ulldretb.
Majrr aommer reddenU hare prawed them*? Irea aa greatly pleeaed to find Mayor BUdretb at the bead of the olty government. Hi* unfailing oourteey and attention, ;too, la favorably noted, and it ia felt that Cape May i* properly and oredltablv represented. The Jonrnaliata were mneh pleased by hi* cordial tender, in a abort epeecb of welcome, of the freedom of the olty. Ock mile* of capacious boardwalk has pleasantly surprised old comer* aa well aa new, and has been very much enjoyed, while everybody baa been loud in the expressions of praise for the improvement. The completion of the walk to the Missing Link and the ereeiloo of additional pavilion Improvement will materially add to the convenience and attractiveness of the beach front. Tear Caps May Is the most healthy resort on tbs Atlantic coast is attested by doctor* from every clime, who visit our shores. Leading medical journals of New York are proclaiming pialaes of Gaps May voluntarily, which shows that this resort has no superior, and another evidanoe of this is the large number of physicians who are numbered among our summer population. It matter* not what avenue one travels upon at Cape May be can find the reason, more than ever two or three physicians in the neighborhood; among them are men of eminence in the profession.
Tub stockholders of Tun Stab ok tbs Can Publishing Company, proprietors of the leading Cape May uaper, the Cape May Daily Stab, are owners of real estate in four townships, three boroughs and the olty of Cape May, In Cap* May county, and In the aggregate pay taxes to a very large amount in both olty and county, and pay wage* to employes In various line* aggregating about WO,000 per year. The Stab, therefore, haa a very large taxpayers' right to comment upon matter* effecting the city’s or oou Interests, a right which will be fuUy exercised.
■e Fourth will be celebrated to-day In -the usual appropriate manner. The opportunities for the relief of the feeling* of tbs great American eagle by ah rill screams of joy at the greatness and glory of this land of ours are more numerous now than formerly, and are not limited to Independence Day. Celebrations and anniversaries are constantly calling forth from publii, orators expressions of intense patriotism and rejoicing at the freedom and progress of the country. And is well. The fundamental principles upon which the national life depends cannot be taught too thoroughly nor too often, and it is far better to have an exuberanoe of patriotic feeling than to have aa apathy which neither knows nor cares. "Old Glory" should be charlahed and displayed at every opportunity, and the lessons of glory and greatness for which It stands should be inculcated at every flreald*.
Owe of the bandsomfst cottages in
town ia tbat a of Mr. Charles J. Miller, on Stockton avenue. Since last year it I has been raised sufficiently to admit of another story under It and new porches have been built around It on both first and second floors. Other improvement* bare also been made until It is complete in every requirement of a first class seaside cottage. It is also so nicely located as to get the benefit of every sea breeze and to command a nice ocean view. Messrs. Ware A Eldrcdge, of ibis city, were .the contractors who remodeled It, and very satlsfaetoi lly to the owner.

log amid favoring condition*. The bop
a brilliant one, and many gentlein attendance were in fn II on while there were many handsomely
tired ladles. The piazza and lobbies
acre crowded, and the evening

the affair pleasant, and he was Well re-
isrdcd for his efforts. Prof. Morgan, s of yore, directed a particularly flue
orchestra, while Prof. Loomis was aa young and pleasing as ever in h's dlreo-
on of the dancers.
There was a renewal of acquaintanceship among old friends of last season, while there were many new faces of ladies and gentlemen entering into the Bloc It ton season of gayety. All seemed in happy mood. This first hop was pre-eminently successful. Among those noticed present were: The Misses Craig, Mias May Mercer, Misaea Diamond, Misses Benezot, Miss Roberts, Mis* Bockius, Mr Geo. PERSONAL.
The trolley pavilion was erected solely for bnslnsss purposes |n defiance of the ordinance governing each ten, and open* the way for the erection of other buildings for similar purposes on the beach, ;tbue making It poatlble no to have our beach obstructed by booths and other objectionable structure* though every movement In this direction for the past thirty years haa been heretofore promptly opposed. The effect of such a catastrophe would be undoubtedly very serious, for Cap* May has always held up the beach obstructed and open as one its greatest ekanus- This la tbs ohonu of objection which has been raised by many of our sume fifrlnst this innovation. Pavilion* sreeted and controlled by. the olty, aoWy for the convenience of visitors , but bulidlnga uatneae purp t aay resort, more aarioualy objectionable at Cape May than elsewhere. It makes forenos who erect them, whether It be Smith, Jones, Brown or Edmunds, the affect 1* the asm*. They are au onamaohwiant upon the rights of tha entire summer population of the olty. The trolley pavilion was bsguD and partially completed In tbs night, virtual acknowledgment of the oo mission of a wrong which could be best

T here la nothing to hinder any other man who can obtain a lease of any portion of the beach, from pursuing pradaely the same course, and the tha gnat price of lots the beach front makes It quite worth the while of speculator* to gain
