ANIMAL MOTHERS.

4 11 dnmb aitimul ami insect mothers hr -•* i rtaiu ways of taking rare of tbeir b hie*, ns well as our mothers do of us. * 1 some of their ways are very queer. At my grandmother's there was an old rat Ilia! liad five kittens, which she kept 111 the hay in the barn. One day one of the f iii' iis went out on a largo beam that extended from onn end of the barn to the oilier, and when he reached the middle of it he Isgau to be afraid and sat down on the beam, mowing piteously. He was so far away from me that I could not reach him, and 1 did not know how to gel him down. Just then the mother cat came up and purred and mewed to him, ndling him to wait until she came. She then went out to where ho was and. as the beam was a broad one. sin* went before him, picked him up iu b*-r mouth aud carried him bark into tho hay out of danger. One day I was up iu the attic, and I found on the ceiling a paper wasp’s licet. I took it off and found that it was empty. There were also several mud wasps' nests, and upon opening some of them I found tiie grubs in one part of the nest and the food, which was nothing but little worms and ius*-els packed together, in another ]*art. *1 brought the paper wasp's nest to my city home, but not the mail nt-xts. The turth» do not take much care of their labi' s. They sors'p a place in the •and afid lay their eggs and then cover them up. The heat of the sun liatcl them, and the young tunics have take care of themaclvee. Frogs lay their eggs in some warm place in the water and fasten them reeds, cattails nr some such plant, and the warmth of the sun hatches them. The eggs are in a cluster, aud cad which Ifloks like white jelly, is the silt- of a .mull pea and has a little round black spot iu the center. I found some once and put them in a large glass Jar will* water iu it and act it in a warm place. After several days each of tlie little spots had a tail, and the jellylike substance that had been around the black spots to ki-cp tl*em from injury began to di*ap|s*ar. 1 found that they bad hatch'd mid were pollywog*. They grew very fast, but never lived to cliange into frogs, as tiny died before they were half grown. Tho potato bug lays Its of underside of a potato leaf, and when the young are hutched tiny have the leaves to cat, and the mot 1st does not have to take rare- of them. The eggs are small and «f a bright yellow color. I have seen a pi cat many of them on one

leaf. ’

Near my grandfather's there is ■ creek, with willows growing on tin edge of it. Cue day I saw two kingflshon a limb id one of the trees and tba Ua-r bird sitting by the aide of them. - w as looking steadily into the water. Suddenly she darted down into the r and in a minute came np with a Mho took it to the little birds, and rtiis she dived several though showing them bow toe The crwbr liavc tbeir homes under large atonea This is the way I found out. I once lifn-d a large atone, and after the water liad become clear 1 looked for a crab. 1 did not ate any, but discovered a boll- that seemed to go under •umeamallci. p'uea. 1 took up the smaller stones, bet the bole seemed to go still farther. As I_ was looking into it I taw a big oat rime out, followed by two •mailer one*. Then 1 knew that this is the way they Eve,—PhiladelphiaTuuaa.
