CURRENT COMMENT MATTERS OP GENERAL AND LOCAL INTEREST DISCUSSED. An Impartial Review of Matters Under Thought—The Talk of the Gossip*. The establishing of a wireless telegraph sUlhtu at Cape May, the erection of which may now be said to have become au asaured fact, b souiotbiug to excite much local Interest, and once the newly discovered process uf forwarding and receiving messages to and from aels at sea b put into actual practice we may well wnndrr Indond at the advance of science iu tbs matter and manner of lonL’ dlstance communication. The writer of this article thought it quite a creditable achievement when in the sixties, after a brief Instruction, be was able to transmit message* over the wire*, and receive by one of those old time ‘•Catnelback” register*. But the more ambitious operators were training the ear to read by sound, and sight operating waa anon existing only in memory. The coming of the typewriter spurred on to greater skill, and many now copy measages directly from the sounder to thb pointing machine. But electrical science could not stop even st thin, and we find selves, if not face to fsoq, at least voice to voice, as it were, with anyone with whom we wish to converse or do business with, almost regardless of distances, might well have supposed that the limit of iusii’k discovery and invention bad been reached, but not so. Not only the scientific, but the c mercial world had of late their attention directed to wireless commuiiicstioiis purported to have been carried oui by Mr. Mareoul with more or less successful resulls, between Lizard Point, lu Cornwall, England, and St. John's, New Foundlaud. But ig not the placing of a station at our Cape being done rather for experttel purposesf While many interested lu electrical aelenne, who have carefully watched the progresi of Attempts to apply thb newly discovered incaps of coyimuulcation to the iutemU of commerce, 1 to have great faith lu the accomplishment of grand resulia, there being critics of the Marconi system who ape raining doubts of its adaptability, in the roauuer In which Marconi himself s<s to a certain extent, to have proven already. I read only a few days since of writer to the London Daily Express who challenged the inventor to prove that wireless messages ar^ in any sense aerial —that they are conveyed through the atmosphere to their destination, or that they have discovered or applied any apparatus by which suqh messenger may be separated and gathered, or rather confined at aunpanicutar atatiou, instead of being taken by every other station, or , or light-house where there were
To be sure, this Is su all-absorbing and Important subject, which even a Cape May journalist may not fail to Uke interest in, especially so now that a wireleas telegraphic station is being placed in position in our midst. It Is possible-that ■Its of the experiments to be made this corolifg spring and rammer, will prove the weakness, If not the injustice of the criticisms above referred to, though it must be said that a perfect of the system must mean that
