They say worry makes people thin. Herbert Is getting too fat and I’ll try It on him.” It took Mr. Dean a long time to notice a change in Edna First, be missed the running fire of question* the asked him on his coming home, as to where he had been, what he had been doing. It Is much easier—as every man knows —to answer questions than to volunteer InfomaUon. and Herbert Dean had nothing to conceal, so he resented this mysterious silence, which suggested a want of proper Interest in him and his affairs. Then he grew curious. What was she thinking about that she should smile and blush to herself in that new way? He asked her casually about her club, her few social engagements, and was briefly Informed that nothing was doing. Yet «he was out mornings and afternoons; she had told that herself. Occasionally she waa out when he came home to dinner. Once he heard her bidding some one good night on the front steps—an^^Bian's voice responded: r Don't ffeVrtioc It, dear Mrs. Dean.' Herbert stalked to the door—It cost bis pride an effort—and palled it open. Edna was alone. "Please advise your escort to be more discreet," he said, savagely, "and speak bis adieus in & lower tone. The neighbors might not be edified If they should

hear.'

Mrs Dean wondered if she had gone too far and made Herbert really unhappy. which was not her Intention. But she waa glad the spell had worked and that he cared enough to be jealous. Wb«c his birthday came he found In bis den a predent from his wife, a superb portrait of herself done in oils. He was surprised and pleased. “You. look as If you were alive In the frame. The likeness Is perfect," he ■aid, with real enthusiasm, giving her a warmer salute than the late perfunctory kiss. “Who palmed it?" "Oh. an artist that I know. Do you like the work?" "Like k! Why, aside from Its value as a portrait it has merit as a work of art. Who did yon say painted It?" •T did not say." responded Edna mlsehiereonsly. Then a barrowing thought tortured Herbert, and he lost all Interest In the picture, ate his breakfast In silence and left without any word or caress. Of course the man who painted (hat picture, to whom she must

mosqultoev may bHong to tbe wrong genus, or may not have had a chance t<> become Infected. Then too, the ree Ideate mry have learned to exclude them with screens. A more puzzling circumstance 1* that doctors sometime* observe an attack ot malaria when few or no mosqultoe* are abouL This point was discussed at length at the recent international Medical congress In Spain, of which the New York Medical News gives an Interesting report. Some of the physicians expreseed the opinion tbit the parasites did not always disappear from'a patient’s system when he had apparently recovered, but continued to develop there, one generation after another, completing the cycle of existence In s human body. Such person* were liable to hare another attack without being freshly bitten. Dr. Ascoll. of Rome, for Instance, reported that malaria In epidemic form often appeared In Italy In June, notwithstanding the fact that at this time there could be but few Infected mosquitoes. Most of these patients showed however, an antecedent malarial history. proving, he thought, the fact that the recurring attacks within tbe individual were what kept malaria in readiness to infect the young mosqui-

toes.

It does not clearly appear that the congress considered the plan for fighting malaria which has found the most favor with American and English sanitarians. and which Is by far the most radical. Prevention of breeding by de priving the mosquitoes of convenient places wherein to lay their eggs seemr to have been Ignored. According tc Tbe Medical News, the majority of th* delegates attached -the most Importance to the use of screens to prevent the young mosquitoes from UscomIng contaminated. Dr. Aacoll thought that If that system of dealing with pa Items were followed as thoroughly and carefully as isolation Is observed In smsllpox. “It would soon limit the transmission of the disease and render epidemics In low mosquitobreeding lands almost unknown." He would employ netting not only to protect healthy people from mosqultoer bat also to protect healthy mosquitoes

from Infected persons.

While accenting the theory that the genns Anopheles Is mainly responsl' ble for spreading malaria. Dr. Hauser of Madrid, believed that the parasite oould reach a human subject otherwise than by the bite of a living mosquito. He thought that the germ might Ure in humid earth under fa verable conditions, and that the germ* might flourish In regions free from mosquitoes. The Inhalation from dried marshes or the drinking of water In fected by the bodies of dead mosquitoes oould infect, and mosquitoes dying In marshes set free the organism which Infects man through the modi-
