Tbe Souato haa had a peeullar carter, politically, am' haa been able to dlaplaoe men f« ]ieraouai advantage to a remarkable digree and be baa many bitter enemiea and man\ fa»t frieoda, and bla aiinontBvmen for a candidacy for a third time will n doubt create a very bitter feeling, wbci at a time the Kcpublleatia of tbe county were peculiarly united and favorable to tbe election of Aaecmblyman Lewia M. Creaae to tbe Sewite. Senator Hand aenred in tbe County Hoard of Kroeholdera from Lowri Townabip for two or three term* prrvloua i.i !ecr*. In 1!®? be was a candidate fi Sheriff on tbe Republican ticket and waa defeated by about 35 'majority! In tbe county, when Grubb' Rep., carried tbo county by DUS majority, and Kugene Cole, Rep , carried the county by 196. In 1892 tbe Senator tried for tbe Sheriff" a office again and that year waa ai reaaful by about tbe aame majority that by which be waa defeated pmvioua by, bo} at that election, while bia m« jority waa that amall, tbe Krpublkcai elect ora carried tbe cnnnty by 169, and lyrndoualager. Rep., for Congreaa carried tbe county by 210 majority. In tbe fall of 1896 Senator Hand decid cd to been roc a candidate for tbe Aaaetn * bly, and by iosenloua work pitted bimaclf againat Aaaemblyman Furman L. Ludlam who bad aerred tbe two prwyioui year* In the Aaaembly, and who by custom which had prevailed In Cape May ooonty, t entitlee to a third term. Senator Hi waa enabled to accomplish bia object and when the convention time came around wrested ibe nomination from Mr. Ludlam. He went before tbe people, and while McKinley, Rep., bad a majority of 1207, and Loudenalager for Cong ice* bad a plurality of 1196, Hand woo by jority of only 469. Tbe next year Hand waa nominated for the Senate^ and although be had to make a bard light, be only defeated David W. Rodan by the amall margin of 2BG, wbjle Cole, Rep., for tbe Aaaembly, without leaving home or doing any electioneering, waa elected

by 485 majority.

Three years ago Senator Hand, in bis candidacy for re-election, pitied himaclf againat Aaaemblyman Ellia H. Marshall, and when be went into the Convention, ao close waa fhe fight that 36 votes which had been cast for Hand in Cape May city. Middle Townrbip and Deonia Townabip, If turned overdo Marshall, would have given.Mr. Marshal! 45 of tbe 60delegate* n the Convention. When tbe Sunator went before tbe peo-, pie, and although it waa a presidential election with McKinley’s plurality at 1121 and Crease's majority for tbe Aaaembly at 1184, Hand pulled through with only 825, and only then after a •very bluer fight. In Hand s attempt last year to defeat Mr. Crease for a re-nomination for tbe Assembly, In order to keep Creaae out of bia way for tbe Senate this year, tbe Senator waa decisively beaten, and only won four delegates out of sixty wbicb made up
