THURSDAY, NOVEMBERS. 1903. The Senatorial Contest. The election is now over, ami the peo- ' pie of the county of Cape May are exceedingly glad-of it. Lc»>» M. C>«»e, Republican, of Ocean City, was fleeted i^le senator over Edward I- Klee, Democrat, of Cape May Court House, by a plurality of 400, and James M. E. Hildreth, Republican, of Ospe MayCitjr, vras chosen assemblyman over Evan* G. Slaughter. Democrat, of Wildwood, by
1300 plurality.
Thus has epded one of the most stubbornly fougfit contests in the county in which the Republican candidates, Lewis M. Orsae and James M. E- Hildreth, had not only to fight Edward L. Rice, the strongest candidate that his party could have pul op, but also bad to fight State Senator Robert E. Hand and his henchmen, including Otranty Superintendent of Public Schools Aaron W. Hand, the Wildwood Sub, and a boat of postmasters and others who had been i given positions by Robert E. Hand, j The Democrats and thetr co-workers j used, it ik.sakl, great quantities ofmon-1 ey, inclnd ii^ MOOD from the State Liquor | League, teeWuce the Republican vote. | It was a fight between the true Kepub- J Leans of the county, who have always | stood at such, and those Democratic I leaders who have, for the revenue they have derived, been posing ss Republicans the past seven years, ajd who have been socking the public office pap, and who tried to fool all the people by say lug to them that they were the true Re-
publican party.
Robert E. Hand, who has had honors bestowed upon him bountifully and who has preached loyalty-to'the party as long as be was benefitting by using the party, showed himself to belong to that class who must be a “leader” or nobody. Aaron W. Hand, too, went back to his original Democratic belief and was really in his element supporting the Democrats as he did in the days of Grover Cleveland. This falseness was not covered up . by putting the Republican ticket at the hi ad of the columns ol the Suit oj Uu Cape, of which A. W. and Robert E. Hand are the principal owners. The Republican party will live and its true members will-control ita destinies tor s while, st least. The people of the coonty were glad of one privilege at Tuesday's election (no matter whether they voted for Crease or Rjce for senmtor), and that was of having a chance to cast a ballot for a man who was head and shoulders in ability and political cleanliness above Robert E. Hand. A majority of the Republicans of the county ruled the Republican primaries and made the nominations this yeaf, and that Republican majority was — fought Tuesday by the Democrats and those mugwumps who have bc-n trviug to manipulate Republican politics.

George a McClellan, son of the CD II War general. was elected third mayor of the Greater New York over Seth Low, Fuskmlsf. the present mayor, by the large plurality of 61.414. Edward M. Grout was elected comptroller and Charles V. Fornes, president of the board of aldermen. These two men were originally on the Fusion ticket and were endorsed by Tain many whereupon the FusionlsU took their names from the Low ballots and nominated other candidates- It was the Domination of Grout and Fornes by Tammany that caused Hugh McLaughlin, the veteran leader of the Kings county Democracy, to bolt and declare that he would not support men who were not Democrats. In spite of his defection, however. McClellan. Grout and Fornes carried Kings county. The management of their campaign there was taken over by State Senator Patrick H. McCarrao when McLaugh-

the .legislature for the re-election of Senator Hanna more than triples any
previous record.
There was much talk among state leaders of both parties about “McClellan going up In New York and Johnson going down In Ohio," having some effect on the Democratic possibilities for next year. There has bqfn a precedent in Ohio for the Democratic candidate for governor the year | previous to national conventions being made one of the delegatee-at-large to the Democratic national convention. and it Is evident from the talk
that the Democrats who opposed . . _ ^ , _ ... . Johnson will continne their organize- - ie ( f g

This makes s total net gain for McClellan of 103,000, as compared with Shephard's vote of tvo years ago. Low carried only one Richmond—by 200 votes. The result was known early and Mayor Low sent a telegram ’of con : gratulalion to Col. McClellan, as -fol-

“I congratulate you on your election. If I can be of service to yon. pray command me BETH LOW." Col. McClellan, who is at present a member of congress, made the following statement: *T deeply grateful to my feljow citizens for their confidence in me. I renew tbt promises which I made before election. I have no bitterness of feeling for any one. Chairman Dick, of the Republican committee, said the result was due to the “remarkable personality of Hanna, popularity of Herrick, endorsement of Roosevelt «and the state administration." and that these conditions brought about harmony among the Republicans, while the Democrat* were divided into factions, and especially “one great faction that repudiated the single tax and other fads and Isms of
Tom Johnson."
Ohio has exceeded 100.000 plurality only twice previous to yesterday, when Hughes carried Ohio by 106.00, and once again during the war. when the soldiers were voting outside the state. The greatest demonstrations were over the announcements from Cleveland that the Republicans bad carriod Cu)aboga .county, the home of Hanna., Claike. Herrick and Johnson, by a decisive plurality. It is believed that the Republicans have carried threefourths of the 88 -counties In the state. Shortly before midnight Chairman Dick announced that the Herrick plurality for governor would exceed 125, .000, and that there would be ovar ion of the 142 votes In the legislature for the re-election of Senator Hanna, .t Is thought that the Republican majority In die legislature on Join ballot will exceed 76., or doable that of any previous legislature.
