Chicago’s CentennUL The Chicago centennial celebration was an event of Interest to the whole country, prtnvarilj as an index of the marvelous growth of the great middle • west which within the lifetime of that city has become the very heart of this raat country. Chicago, however, la not a century | old nor anything like It. bnt It waa In | 1803 that a detachment of soldier* un- j der command of Major Whlsndf start-! ed to erect Fort Dearborn, named In honor of the eecretary of war. on Chicago river. But there was no such place as Chicago in 1808 or for many years afterward. When the town of Chicago was laid out and platted. In 1880, there were only thirty or forty persons on the site. exdnsPre of the addicts In the vicinity. Chicago had only 4.400 Inhabitants in 1840. 30.000 In 1800 and 100.000 In 1800. Nevertheleos the celebration Waa timely and pertinent as marking an event vtelcli ultimately led to the founding of what la today In many respects the most marvelous city ever built. Although as a community it la but seventy-three years of age and has been bit by panics and conflagrations, one of the latter being the most destructive In Its line which the world has seen. It has today more than 2.000,000 people. It la the second city on the ‘ American continent In Inhabitants and wealth and the fourth In the world, being led In this order by London. New York and Daria its growth is at a rate which win probably bring It op to Paris by 1D10 or 1812. By 1840. when New York will pa** London, at the rate of Increase, exclusive of New York's recent annexations, of the past quarter of a century, the chances are that Chicago will not be far behind

New York.

As a hustling, restless, aggressive and indeed audacious community Chicago Is a magnificent representative of

the great went of whose marvelous _ growth and development the whole 7~o’clock,

country may well be proud.
