Watehlsw Ike Bird. Migrate Bawthward—Perils Which Beset the Little Weathered Travelers la Their Lead Joaraera. One bright moonlight night, about a yaar ago. I want wifti a friend to tbe top of a hill to watch the birds which at this season are Journeying toward the aeuth tn countless thousands We aware that we had chosen a good night for tbs wort, for we beard, apparently from the atars, an almost it twittering, which proved that the winged voyagers were passing over us In a steady stream. Of course ws could see nothing with onr naked eyea, but we had with ua a telescope, and we took turns in watching the bright surface at the. moon For hours we -watched, and during tbC whole of the time, little black figures went “flitflit—flit” across vhe glowing disk, sometimes %t considerable Intervals, and at other times in such rapid succession that ws had difficulty In keeping count of them. Now and then some large birds would pass, and from some peculiarity In lu fight It was possible at times to even Identify the specs to which it belonged. Such observations may be made by anyone during the fall season, and any bird student who will take the trrfublr to make them will get an insight Into the subject of bird migration which he could scarcely get In any other way. Of course almost everyone is more oi acquainted with the annual flight of the wild geese, and as they pasr above ua In the gray dswn of a spring morning, each with his neck extended toward the pole, they form h picture rhlch we could scarcely forget; but to >e It Is not nearly so Impressive aa the clear twitterings of millions of smaller migrants, falling straight through the frosty air of a starlight
