The discovery of Ibis Important scientific feature was practically by accident in the course of experiments. It was desired to make a photograph of a rack of test tubes containing aescuUn. fluorescln and qnlnlne liquids. These were placed In front of the machine and subjected to the light The negative showed the fluorescent tubes a deep black. The rays did not penetrate the liquid and made a heavy shadowgraph upon the plate. Another experiment was made, adding to the tack two tubes of dear water. The rays penetrated the water, but did not penetrate the fluorescent liquid. Then the hand of one of Dr. Morton's assistants and afterward a stomach were photographed. Comparisons were made with negatives taken of similar portions of the body when the subject bad not been treated with fluorescent liquid. Where there had been no treatment the impressions were indistinct, bat where fluorescent liquid bad been taken it gave shape to the interior, and a clear reproduction was obtained on the negative. Dr. Morton's discovery makes the X ray practical for diagnosis and In intestinal diseases or appendicitis enables the surgeon to chart the seat of trouble accurately and use his knife without fear of making a haphazard

At the international congress of wlreus telegraphy, which recently met In Berlin, the term “radiograms" waa used for messages sent by the sew method. The term has the advantage of being descriptive. The electric discharge between two vessels of mercury In * partial vacuum Is the most efficient form of artlflcUi lightning yet discovered. In a recent teat ty W. C. Geer, the mercury terminals were about four-fifths of an Inch apart, and an arc of two Inches In length was produced by a direct current of 110 volte. Nearly 60 per cent, of tbe energy supplied waa converted Into risible light Turning to other lights, the Gelssler tube showed an efficiency of 32 per cent.; the ordinary arc lamp, ten; acetylene gas, ten; the incandescent electric lamp, six, and the Argand gas burner, 1.6.

It was In experimenting with fluorescent liquids that I >r. Morton got on tbe track of what will be a still more valuable discovery—tbe production oi cold light One of his test tubes—filled with aesculln. which nnder the X ray Is of an ultra violet color—was excited by s certain mineral which be bad placed In the tube. When tbe liquid was drained from tbe tube there was left upon the glass a blue, cold light that did not diminish as the glass dried. If Dr. Morton fully develops this discovery It means that If an electric lamp costs a cent an hour be can produce a cold light that wUl coot onehundredth of a cent and give greater illuminating power. The mineral that Dr. Morton Is experimenting with Is practically Indestructible and is easily agitated by s very weak electric current. It gives out a beautiful light without bent.
Believe me, the talent of success Is nothing more than doing what you can do well and doing .whatever you do without a thought of fame. If It come at all. It win come because ft Is deserved, not because it Is sought after. And. moreover, there wUl be no misgivings, no disappointment. *7.
