Recent mention of the disappearance of the $2.50 gold piece from circulation and the premium this coin command* at a curio ha* set many to rummaging in old pocket book* and the bottoms of cash boxes and drawers In search of odd or out-of-date coins, say* the Portland Oretonlan. Some have found a $1.50 piece, 1 but not many. The $3 piece, once quite common, but always a sort of curiosity. Is oftener found, and many hare .specimens of the little gold coins representing 25 cents and 50 cents, which wer^ not minted by the government and pnmably have not so much gold In them as they represent. They used to pass as coin, but were never in general circulation, being so easily lost that they soon became scarce One of the hand*omest coin rtllcs seen U a $10 gold piece bearing the mint stamp of 1789. It,is larger than the present $10 piece. The owner has it hung In a band and wears li as a charm oq his Watch chain. The owner says he fefnsed an offer of $150 for this relic. The old octagonal $50 pieces were quite common in California In early days, when gold dust was largely qsed as a cir» tu'.stlng medium. They Were made of bore gold, Lnd while they had not the elegant finish of the gold coins minted by the government In these days, many still remember them as the handsomest coin they ever saw. Many people now would consider them handsome on ac-
count of the $50 in them.

THE MODERN INDIAN.
Charges White Mmm m» Agailasloa Fee If Be Waal* to See Mala •make Daaea. Tbs Indians are rapidly "catching on" to the ways of the white man. The Moki snake dance for 1903 at Wolpl. Arizona, on the Santa Fe, is a good example of how the modern commercial spirit ts spreading. Untjl now visitors have been permitted to witness' this spectacle without money and without price, the Indians being content with what they could pick up from the camera fiends for posing, and from the toRrists generally for baskets, pottery and blankets. This year each visitor was charged a dollar, with a sliding scale of special favors like going down, Into the kiva where the snakes air kept. The d^nce was Just aa weird as ever and the spectators more than got the worth of their money; but the old-tim-ers sadly viewed the change and predict that the dance will be discontinued before many seasons have passed. You would better go to the next one. or It may be too late to see this most remarkable pagan ceremony. The Santa Fe has on exhibition In Its Chicago offlie a notable painting by Cross of a snake dancer, based on a sketch made by him while In Moklland tn 18V. The difference between then and to-day is quite evident in minor details of costume, but the main ft tares are much the same..
Dr. Samuel 1 Johnson married a Mrs. Toner of Birmingham. That lady's daughter thus described tbe doctor's oolng: “His appearance was very forbidding. He was thou lean and lank, so that his Immense structure of bones was hideously striking to the eye, and tbe scars of the scrofula were deeply risible. He also wore hla hair, which was straight and stiff, and sepa ' rated behind, and be often had, seemingly, &nvalsive starts and odd gesticulations. which tended to excite at once surprise and ridicule. Mrs. Porter was so much engaged by bis conversation that abe overlooked all these external disadvantage* and said to her daughter, Tbto Is the moat sensible map that I ever saw In my life.'” Mrs. Porter, who was twice Johnson’s age. was not easily won. Urged by her learned lover to say why abe still refused him, she said an uncle of hers bad been bung and she did not wish to bring disgrace on him. “Is that alir said Johnson. “Why. though _ have never bad an ancle bung. 1 have two or three uncles who deserve It. It has been often asked whether or not docks can soreii. Some hunters cite from tbelr experiences instance* that seem to show docks can smell: ethers say that docks cannot. Sow the naturalist would say that ducks, owing to tbelr habK, hpve no need to smell and hence cannot Tbl* rule Is oot infallible, but generally Bolds good. Any wild thing with auch eyes as docks have does not need to smell. Nature seems to have given blrth^a discerning eye and animals a discerning l . A fox will look' straight at a man and not see him, even when only a few feet away, provided be doc* not smell him or the man does not move A duck will not only sec a man standing perfectly still at a long distance, regardless of the wind, but will notice any change in the landmarks of Us haunts or feeding grounds.—Outing.
