Jones, the “goluen ndr” mayor of Toledo, who died Tuesday of last week, belonged to that-school of earnest, honest, impractical reformers of which the late Gov. Mr. Jones seems to have learned hi* trade from Mr. Pingree, and his political policies were shaped largely after those of his Michigan prototype except that Mr. Tones carried his theories f-irther toward their logical conclusion and became an avowed so- . tialn t Such men as Pingree and Jonhs have their excellent uses in democracy. In spite of their crude polices and their pbsurd theories they focus public attention npon many grave abuses that better-bal»nced men are often afraid to denounce. While their own remedies are frequently worse than the evils to be cured, it often comes about that the right remedy is. finally administered solely a* a result of their diagnosis and their extravagant confidence in quack nostrums. An entire government of such men would be impossible, but a few of them now and then are highly useful. If they did no more than rrouae pubhc opinion from ita lethargy and compel it to consider existing facts, all their follies and fallacies could be freely
