New Jrraey aaa Doubtful State. From the Newark News. Already numerous articles have been published forecasting the possible result of the coming Presidential election and classing the different States of the Union as Republican, Democratic and doubtful. In every instance New Jersey D classed in the doubtful column, for the reason, probably, that In former years It was In the habit of giving Democratic majorities. There seems to be an Impression abroad that it was the defection of the gold Druloersu in 1806 and 1900 that placed New Jersey In the Republican column. Jerseymen. however, know that this is an error. While McKinley's matchless pluralities of ^7.0*9 in 1806 and 56,809 in 1000 were largely swelled by the votes of gold Democrats, it most be remembered that In 1805Griggs, Republican, was chosen Governor by a plurality of 06,000 over such an exceptionable candidate as the late Chancellor McGill, and that in 1804 there was a large Republican plurality on the legislative ypte. In fact, for the last tan years, at least. New Jersey baa been a Republican State and the preponderance of that party has grown rather than leaaeoed. At the preernt time there Is no Indicat km that on national laanea New Jersey is anything but safely Republican, and If the Democratic hopsa of carrying the other •exalt'd doubtful States are based on no better foundation than they are In New Jersey.
